| We visited Kacaba on August 1st and tasted the wines with Mike Lachance. The wines:
2004 Riesling, 12.6% alcohol, $14-
Light apple juice nose. Dry. Sharp. 76
2003 Pinot Gris, 12.1% alcohol, $18-
Musty nose. Sharp. Not good. 72
2004 Pinot Gris, 14.1% alcohol, approximately $18 (just bottled, not for sale at the time)-
Citrus nose. Fairly rich. 80
2000 Oak Aged Chardonnay, 12.8% alcohol, $22-
Beautiful nose of pineapple. Melon flavor. Balanced, A drop light. 86
2002 Old Vines Chardonnay, 14.9% alcohol, $50-
Light medicinal nose. Hint of grapefruit. OK. 83
2002 Pinot Noir, 12.5% alcohol, $25-
Cherry nose. Balanced, but light. 85
2004 Pinot Noir, 13.7% alcohol, approximately $25 (recently bottled, not for sale at the time)- Nose closed. Light. 84
2000 Cabernet, 12% alcohol, $17, (85% Cab Franc, 15% Cab Sauv)- Chocolate and dark fruit nose. 84
2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, 12.5% alcohol, $22-
Bell peper nose, some depth. Nice, but light. 85
2002 Merlot, 13.5% alcohol, $25-
The wine they poured was madeirized and had been open for 2 days. No replacement was offered. :rolleyes:
2002 Cabernet France Reserve, 13.7% alcohol, $35- Berry nose. Balanced. Nice. 86
2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, 13.7% alcohol, $35- Berry nose. Concentrated. Tannic. Promising. 87
2002 Meritage (just bottled, not labelled yet), $40- Dark fruit and cedar nose. Balanced. 85
2002 Cabernet Franc Icewine, 12.2% alcohol, $40-
Strawberry jam nose. Perfect balance. Juicy flavors. 93
At the previous visit, I felt Kacaba produced some of the best Chardonnay in Niagara. Their 2000 Oak Aged Chardonnay was one of the better Chardonnays we tasted in Niagara. Their reds have improved and were a little better than average for the region, and their Cab Franc Icewine was one of the best. | | | |
