We visited this winery 12 days ago.

2004 Chardonnay, 12% alcohol, $10-
Rubbing alcohol nose, WHOA NELLIE! God couldn't identify this as a Chardonnay, 72

2003 Chardonnay Reserve, 12% alcohol, $20-
Oak and melon nose, simple, better than merely drinkable, 80

2004 Riesling, 11.1% alcohol, $13-
Nose of melon and pineapple, crisp, citrusy, very good, 87

2004 Gewurtztraminer, 13.5% alcohol, $13-
Nice perfumed nose, rough, 70

2003 Pinot Noir, 12% alcohol, $26-
Muted cherry nose, a little sharp, 78

2003 Cabernet Franc, 11%, $16-
Pepper and vegetal nose, sharp, 77

2001 Merlot, 12.7% alcohol, $20-
Spicy, hint of Sherry (early madeirization?), sharp, 74

2003 Pinnacle, 11.5% alcohol, $21, Cabernet Sauvignon 85%, Merlot 10%, Cabernet Franc 5%-
Fruit pie nose, sharp, 78

2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, 12.8% alcohol, $28- Light berry nose and flavor, 80

2004 Vidal Icewine, 11% alcohol, $25-
Grapes frozen in winery, botrytis nose, sweet with good acidity, one of the best Vidal icewines I've ever had, 92

The Vidal Icewine sounds like a winner.

It was. The single biggest change I found in the Finger Lakes and Niagara was that the Vidal icewines have better balance than they did three years ago. They're somehow stepping up the acidity to balance the sweetness, making the wine less coarse and cloying. Vidal still lags all other varietals in producing excellent icewine in these regions.
