Proving yet again that many of the Texas winemakers aren't growing the right grapes nor making decent wines.

  • 2002 Fall Creek Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Cuvee - USA, Texas (7/9/2005)
Somewhat recognizable as cab. A waste of calories. (75 pts.)
  • 2000 Messina Hof Papa Paulo Port Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Cuvee - USA, Texas (7/9/2005)
More weird synthetic aromas. It is very light for a Port-styled wine but the flavors aren't terrible. But the smell! AWOC (a waste of calories). (70 pts.)
  • 2001 Messina Hof Papa Paulo Port Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Cuvee - USA, Texas (7/9/2005)
Couldn't get past the weird, synthetic aromas. AWOC (a waste of calories). (70 pts.)
  • 2000 Messina Hof Cabernet-Merlot Paulo - USA, Texas (7/9/2005)
Egads this was foul. A misguided gift that was taking up space. Bugspray aromas and non-identifiable varietals. (50 pts.)

Sounds like livestock stuff. I sympathize with you. I really want to like NY wines, and some of ours seem a little better than what you described, but still not worth buying. I envy those VC people who live in areas where good wine is made.

With "Livestock Show and Rodeo Cuvee" in the name, you'd expect a little barnyard...

One thing to remember Board-O is there are no tougher graders of Texas wines than serious Texas oenophiles like Winetex and myself. It's not that we don't want Texas wines to succeed. She hit the nail on the head. They produce the wrong wines IMO.

BTW...there are streaks of brillance every now and again. Witness the 99 Becker Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve. A good wine in its' own right.

I'm very aware of that. I feel the same way about NY wines. I keep trying them.

What wines should Texas produce then?

For one Muscat. Every Muscat I've had from Texas wineries was light years ahead of just about every red I've had.

In my non-expert opinion the Texas wineries need to cultivate warm weather varietals. I think they do cab because they feel that's what people will buy. Like WIML the white wines I've tried really have been better than the reds.

Tex, that seems to be the case in all less than stellar regions. In Canada, NY, Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, etc, the whites are generally better than the reds.

The whites from Texas far outshine all of the reds I have tasted. Gotta agree with WIML, the best I have had are Muscats and late harvest (sweet) whites.

"Good wineries in Texas" is oxymoronic

The best wines from mediocre regions are normally sweet or fortified. The sugar and/or the high alcohol hides a lot of flaws.

We generally hit the ones in the Texas Hill Country simply because they are all within a reasonable drive of each other so you can make a nice day of it and end up in someplace like Fredericksburg for dinner and a B&B. Makes a nice weekend trip.

Bella, check out this website for a good overview of the Texas Wine Trail through the Hill Country. Something to bear in mind as well...we'll probably be coordinating an offline in Fredericksburg sometime during Octoberfest if you'd like to go down around that time frame.

I admit it. I am prejudiced.

A couple of weeks ago I was in Fort Worth and met wiml and Purple at a nice little wine bar. I tasted several Texas wines that the owner was touting and was very impressed at how they tasted.

(Does the word "impress" only mean that something is "good"? If it does I have used the wrong word.)
