Ziraldo was always big on the Pinot Noir, wasn't he?

I think they're only up to releasing the 2000 so far, have you tried that as well?

Welcome, SJU.

TJ, I wouldn't say they make PN, not anything that you'd want to buy. futronic gave this one more points than I've ever given one. I haven't tried this Inniskillin PN, so I have no direct knowledge of it. I have visited the winery three or four times and found all their wines substandard, even the sweet wines. Many other wineries in the area produce better ice wines than Inniskillin. For some reason, marketing probably, they get a lot more attention than they deserve.

Thanks very much for the welcome everyone, and yes, Niagara's been doing Pinot Noir for a number of years, but as Board_O mentioned, they're not anything special.

Though the climate's along the lines of Burgandy (or so it's claimed), the sandy loam has never really produced a great Pinot.

Now, I've yet to try the 2002 Pinot Noir from "Niagara College Teaching Winery", it's a newer place featuring a winemaker who's been around for awhile (Jim Warren), as part of Niagara College's new Viticulture/Oenology Program. It was apparently the toast of the 2004 Ontario Wine Awards a few months ago, and retails at $18.95.

As for Inniskillin, they were the first winery in the area to open up in the new wave - I believe it was 1974 when they got their license. Hybrids mostly (Foch, Chelois, Vidal, etc) at first, but Don Ziraldo, the founder, was always adamant about Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir.

The two "Founders Series" wines they do are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, both too expensive for a student like myself (around $30 I believe). I mean, if you're going to invest, you should invest in quality. The Chardonnay I've heard good things about, but their Pinot I haven't tried.

As for their popularity, it's partly because of their history, and partly marketing. They're owned by Vincor, the 4th largest wine company in North America (they've purchased wineries all over the world, I'd have to dig out the complete list for all the names), so they'll be some of the first wines getting out of Canada.

I will say in their defense though, their Cabernet Franc Icewine is pretty nice. Of course, it's around $80 or so, but the sample I got for $2 was a treat.

That said, if you have any questions at all about Ontario/Niagara, I'll do my best to answer. I've done about 42 of the 50-odd wineries in the Niagara Peninsula, hope to close the rest out by next summer.
