| My oh my. Brian at Belle Pente does make a fine Murto. In fact, as of 2001 he may be the only one making a vineyard designate from Murto, since Raptor Ridge stopped with 2000. More power to Belle Pente, then, as this vineyard is one of the most distinctive in the Red Hills of Dundee. Brian's wines (and those of Raptor Ridge) show a marked spicy note with some earthy notes that are unmistakeable and consistent from vintage to vintage, differing only in the unctuousness of the palate and the length of the aromatics and finish.
While no vintages have topped 1999, the 2000 is very tasty. The Murto spice is in good abundance, and the palate is healthy and lengthy. Earth and cherry make their presence known as well. This isn't a big wine, relying on character instead of heft to make its point. But it isn't a shy, pale raspberry spritzer either. It insists on attention. Very distinctive.

| Marc,
I agree: I like Brian's wines alot, and the Murto in particular. Unfortunately, I understand that the '02 or '03 Murto (can't recall which) was the victim of a neighbor spraying Crossbow or similar on a hot / windy day. Huge bummer. The hazards of farming... and really stupid neighbors. (It's been awhile since I heard that story, so I hope I got it generally correct. Anyhow, I know there's a tragedy in there somewhere).
The 2000 Belle Pente Reserve is a BEAST. Those that like thick wine will love this one.
I also really like Brian and Jill's whites-- great riesling and pinot gris.
Really good quality wine across the board, and very reasonable prices.

| It was 2003. There will be 250 less cases of Murto as a result, according to Belle Pente's web page. | | | |
