| Willamette Valley 13.6 % alcohol 34% new french oak Unfiltered.
Decanted about 45 minutes prior to drinking. Had with broiled pork tenderloin medallions in a red wine and mustard based marinade.
Nose was initially pure red fruit; raspberry, cherry mostly. As it evolved it eventually took on what I detected to be light floral notes, earth and wood-ash. On the palate this was initially a pleasantly tart cherry and red berry. After about an hour and 1/2 to two hours this shed almost all tartness and became a silky smooth balanced pinot, still primarily red fruit. Palate faded after about 2 1/2 hours. | | | |

| Tasted at the Denver offline on 1/18/03. This was the sixth wine tasted out of nine.
To me, this was another of the surprise wines. I have heard from others that this wine was drinking beautifully now, and orginally opened a bottle on 1/17/03. My notes basically mirrored those of smaug, though I did not notice an drop off on the palate until roughly the three hour mark.
Tonight: decanted for approximately 2-1/4 hours before tasting. Medium red in color. A nose that none of the men in the tasting could identify. The women, however, had no problem identifying the smell. They instantly shouted "Diaper Genie!" Wonder why the men had a hard time identifying it? They also identified it more colloquially as s**t, and as Johnson's baby powder.
On the palate, this wine was still a smooth and well balanced cherry. Some tasters noted it was a little dry.
Group rating on this was number four out of nine wines. I rated this one number five, mrs. mbansek rated it number seven. I wish I had the scorecards for all of the other tasters, but my gut instinct is that the men rated it higher than the women did.
I was really surprised by the nose tonight. Both of the bottles I had were purchased from the same place at the same time, and stored identically. To me, this is a good example of bottle variance.
A summary of the night can be foundhere.
