| Tasted blind yesterday alongside the 1999 Martinelli Reserve and 2000 Archery Summit Arcus Estate. Procedures are in the Martinelli thread. WS rated this one a 93.
Initial taste, approximately 1/2 hour after opening: Color is darker than the Martinelli, which was the lightest, but nowhere near as dark as the Archery Summit. This wine had the most intense nose of the three by a wide margin. Cherry, raspberries and just a hint of strawberries, accompanied by floral notes. On the palate, raspberries and cherries, with a spicy oak finish. The finish was short to medium in length. Relatively balanced wine from the beginning. Mrs. mbansek commented on the cherry nose, but did not like the wine much. She thought it was pretty acidic for a pinot.
1-1/2 hours after decanting: The nose of this one retains the intensity of the first note. On the palate, I am picking up a little bit of black cherry, providing a nice balance to the red notes. The spicy oak finish is still there, and has increased in length. Still nice balance. Mrs. mbansek had no comments at this time, still said she does not like it.
3 hours after decanting: Raspberry, cherry and spice on the nose. The intensity of the nose has backed off a bit, seemingly better balanced. On the palate, the same raspberry and cherry notes are present, but the wine has become a bit earthier. Adds a lot more character to the palate. The finish has become spicier, but the tannins have become much more drying. Mrs. mbansek does not like the earthy notes at all.
4-1/2 hours after decanting and later: No more formal notes on this wine. However, the earthy notes seem to have disappeared, and the tannins remain drying.
Rating for this one would depend on the time of the tasting. The nose was fantastic at the beginning, but on the palate this one was probably at its peak between the 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 hour mark. In that time frame, I would put this one at 91 points, a step behind the Martinelli. Mrs. mbansek would not rate it as high.
I think I will let the remaining bottle sleep for another year or two.

| We had a bottle of this on New Years eve. Here were my notes.
Light cranberry color. Not heavily extracted like a lot of 99 Oregon Pinot. (This is the first Ken Wright I have tried, so I am rather ignorant about whether this is typical for his style). Raspberry, a little spice, and lots of sour cherry. All of us agreed it felt a little hotter than 12%, but that was probably been due to the high acid level and tartness of the fruit. Overall this was a pleasant food wine, but didn't stand well on it's own. Let it sit a year or two and see if that acid settles. | | | |
