Medium garnet color, with a very nice black cherry and blackberry nose. The wine explodes in the mouth with intense cherries, blackberries, earth, and that little Cristom tannin thing (I'm not sure that this is really tannins, but I'm at a loss to better describe it). The wine is very slightly on the acid side, and ends with a moderately long finish.

While this wine had the components of a very good wine, the overall experience was rather disjointed - the pieces just didn't result in a great drinking experience. 87 points. Maybe it improves with age, I don't know.

One other observation. This wine comes in a bottle that can only be described as ridiculous. The thing was huge and very heavy. It had a 3+ inch punt on the bottom, for heavens sake! I think the winery must have a real ego problem.

If I didn't like their wine quite a bit I wouldn't buy them because of the &%(@ bottles.

Duke, your notes on the 1999 are very similar to mine on the 2000 tasted at the winery:

smooth, a little disjointed, needs time, 88

For me it's the Jessie that really sings, though Louise seems quiet attractive as well. I tend to buy Cristom in restaurants, not willing to invest in cellar quantities at Cristom's price point. When Jessie is on the list, it's a near lock. My notes describe the '98 as "dark, surly, and wonderful". Surly is a good word for Cristom - they probably need more time than I'm willing to give them, but a vicious and tasty wine suits me just fine.

Marc, I can assume that you have had the '99 Jessie's. I have a magnum and want to know the best time to open it. I was thinking 2004-2006.

Winetex,
I'm with you on the bottles. I have several bottles of Cristom's Salud! cuvee from 1999, and the bottles only fit in my magnum racks. While there are a number of wineries using outsized bottles up here, Cristom and Ken Wright have taken this to a whole new level.

I have the 2000 Margaret, Jessie, Louise, and Eileen, of which I have only had the Eileen (twice). In addition, I have had several of the 2000 Reserve PNs. I am overly enthusiastic about the Eileen. I forget whether I gave it a personal score of 93 or 94, but for me it is the best PN I have tasted this year. My understanding is that it is harder to obtain than the others. Have any of you been able to obtain the Eileen yet?

I've had the Eileen, but don't own any. A friend of mine was able to talk the winery out of six bottles. I haven't seen it around town at all, which is unusual.

IMO it's the best wine Cristom makes, and is one of the better Oregon Pinots from 2000.

JB:

I have had a bottle of the '99 Jessie, and it was very good. But I'm a young wine drinker and haven't the gumption to drink magnums, so I'm not much help in preparing for distant future uncorkings. Older wines don't do it for me. I'm finishing the last of my 97's and 98's now.

Cheers.

I decanted for about an hour. The wine is definately mature and is a wonderful food wine. We got cherry and spice on the nose and palate. The alcohol is 13.5%. Light body with smooth finish. The vines in this vineyard were six years old and this is a wonderful effort for such young vines. I will be drinking our remaining bottles over the 18 months. I am really gald I waited on this one.
