| After returning from Crater Lake, we decided it was time to visit another winery, so we drove south of Jacksonville 6 miles to the Valley View Winery. An attractive new building housed the tasting room. They advertise that they will ship to all 50 states. The wines:
2002 Pinot Gris $12 Nose of canteloupe. Rough finish. 85
2002 Chardonnay $12 Nose closed. Blah. 83
1998 Cotes du Rogue Syrah/Zinfandel $12 Light color. Nose of dark fruit. Light. 84
The following wines are the wineries Anna Maria wines- their Reserves:
2002 Chardonnay $18 Oak and chocolate nose. Big. Nice. 87
2002 Viognier $18 Floral nose. Tropical fruit flavors. 87
2000 Merlot $20 Nose of cedar and leather. Ripe flavors. 88
1999 Merlot, Quail Run $30 Nose of violets. Concentrated. 88
2000 Cabernet Franc $24 Nose of pepper and smoke. A little harsh. 86
1999 Meritage $40 Musty nose. Coffee flavors. Young. 87
2000 Syrah, Applegate Valley $30 Light nose of spice. Smooth, but light. 87
2000 Syrah, Rogue Valley $30 Nose closed. Rough. 85
2000 Sauvignon Blanc Late Harvest $34/375 This is actually an ice wine. The description on the bottle describes it as made from "frozen botrytis affected grapes," leaving frozen skins behind. It had an intense botryis nose of honey and raisins with flavors of figs and raisins. 92
General impressions: This winery makes sturdy drinkable wines and many at a modest price. With a few year's time, they could be worthy of purchase. The Jacksonville Inn features some of their wines on their wine list. | | | |
