| You have to let yourself be surprised every now and then, to discover the good things in wine. At a simple local restaurant recently, I spotted a bottle of this on the list for a mere $28. I figure retail it's probably $15 (and sure enough, I found a couple bottles at the grocery for that price).
Cooper Mountain advertises itself as an organic grower, a label which has never meant all that much to me. I had one of their reserve wines some time ago and wasn't whelmed. But for the price, a 1999, I figured why not, and I'm sure glad I did. It was nicely aromatic, even floral in the nose, with plenty of darker berry notes in the nose and palate, tending toward medium body but with some heft, and finishing pretty long. Distinct notes of Oregon earthiness made it a genuine local article. 1999 was a great year here, and this wine speaks well for the vintage.
Tasting blind against more expensive, stiffer competition (Torii Mor Seven Springs and St. Innocent Brickhouse), my father preferred this wine by large measure, and I can't really disagree. So now I have to pay attention to these folks. I heard a rumor - possibly unfounded - that the winery is/was being sold, so I don't know the future for them. But it's worth keeping an eye out.
