This is a 14.6% alcohol wine from an atypically hot Oregon vintage. Le sud is aged in 100% new French oak.
Opened to consider a decant and found a huge nose of black cherries and concentrated raspberry. Body was thickly concentrated (both in taste and texture) fruit, mostly raspberry, with some acidity behind it. No hint of oak. I recorked the bottle without decanting.
Served two hours later, the nose was not diminished at all, but the fruit on the palate had stepped back a notch, allowing a finer balance of acidity and sugar, and secondary characteristics (some mint/eucalyptus shimmering and rich, savory flavors) were peeking through. Texture was fantastic, velvety and lush. I expected to maybe find some tannin showing through, but it was buried. Towards the end of the bottle the oak became evident in the nose.
This was a great bottle of wine and I suspect it has a fair amount of life left in it. I've got three more bottles and I intend to give the next 8-12 months age.
