| Salud! is a charity auction benefitting migrant farmworker healthcare. For the 1998 vintage 23 of the state's best winemakers (DDO, Ken Wright, St Innocent, Brickhouse, Bethel Heights, Cristom, etc) each contributed a barrel of wine. The wines were available to taste, and then 12 cases of each wine were auctioned off. I split a case of this with a friend for $75/bottle.
This wine is a blend of wines from the Freedom Hill vineyard, Lange's home vineyard, and the Yamhill vineyard. Yields were between 1 to 2 tons/acre.
Dark, clear garnet color. Black cherries and raspberries in the nose with just a hint of VA that blew off in about 15 minutes and a little oak peeking through. The palate explodes with sweet cherries, raspberries, and tart blueberries that follow through the mid-palate, and continues into a nice long finish. A good dose of acid give this wine a solid backbone. Tannins are barely perceptible in the finish.
This wine surprised me because it aged for almost two years in 100% new oak, yet the oak was barely evident. While this wine is drinking very nicely now, I expect it to continue to improve for another couple of years. 91 points.
