This wine comes from a small block of Draper clone chardonnay in the Abbey Ridge vineyard. John Paul usually ends up harvesting in late October. John used to use some of the other clones in the vineyard for this wine as well, but the wine from this one section was always superior to the rest. So now he only ends up with around 100 cases. Clear, Pale gold color. Pear, figs, and butter in the nose. As the wine opened up, I picked up some hazelnuts, apples, and a touch of oak as well. Bright pears and apples on the palate that morphs into meyer lemon on the mid-palate. The lemons continue to a long, very nice finish. Very good grip. Very good now, but this will be better in a few years. 92 points.

Clear, medium gold color. Smoky pears, figs, butter, and hazelnuts in the nose. Intense but warm pears, apples and more smoke on the palate, with the meyer lemon joining the party in the mid-palate. Great finish, very nice body (not too viscous - just right), wonderful balance. This wine reminds me somewhat of a 1995 Ramonet Chassagne Montrachet "Morgeot" that I had several years ago, and a 1997 Ridge Estate Chardonnay that I had in 2005. Both had that smoky aroma and flavor that this wine possesses. This wine, though, has better concentration and complexity than the Ramonet and better balance than the Ridge. A marvelous wine that is close to its peak.
