  • 2002 Gary Andrus Pinot Noir Gypsy Dancer Gary & Christine's Vineyard - USA, Oregon (1/4/2005)
Decanted about an hour. A bright nose of vanilla and black fruit. On the palate juicy blackberries with overtones of spice and what I can only describe as earth after a fresh spring rain. Nicely heady. I would have been happier with a longer finish. All in all, an excellent effort. (91 pts.)

Thanks for the note, juggernt.

Perhaps because I did not decant this, but I felt a little more reserved about this wine. My note was: Lightly colored. Soft strawberry nose with some spice and mint. Taut on the palate, with a narrow or pinched flavor profile. A touch of vegetable on the finish.

I never really think to decant Oregon PN, but I think I will try this one again and give it a fairer test. Thanks!

I'm with Michael - I found this clipped. Age probably helps a little but I doubt it will ever be anything special - and at those prices I definitely want special.

From what I understand, they took control of this property most of the way into the 2002 vintage, so in a lot of ways, I think better things are to come from Gypsy Dancer. Once they have more direct control over everything and get their feet under them, I am hopeful that this will be a winery to watch.

Winegeek, what did you pay? IIRC, I paid about $27, which seems like a bargain for a PN.

FWIW, Here in Mass, this goes for about $43. I picked some up at a one-day sale for $32. I agree that I would drink more at $27!

Michael (P.S. Thanks for the welcome to the board message on another thread)

I didn't pay - they were trying to get me to carry it in the shop. Depending on how much the store bought it would have sold for between $37.99 - $39.99. I would have been a lot more interested at half that price. If you paid $27 that says to me that somebody (the winery, the local wholesaler, your retailer) reduced the price to get rid of their inventory.

Opened a bottle with friends to see how our tasting notes would match up to ones mentioned. Initially, we noticed some spicy red fruit flavors and I also picked up some brown fruit flavors. The wine was still pretty tight and finished dry. Our mistake was trying this wine by itself. We brought out the entree of pork loin, spaghetti squash, and mixed vegetables with sweet potatoes and black beans, and the wine gained some depth. The wine took on some pomegranite flavors and the tannins filled out.
