We had this wine this evening with a shrimp and andouille gumbo I made. After last weeks DPAW disaster, I was pleased that this came out so well. The wine-

-had a beautiful, though subdued, nose of pears. On the palate, the wine is smooth and the flavor of pears predominates. The only flaws seem to be a small hint of bitterness on the finish and I'd have preferred a little more of the unctuousity this grape can produce. 89 points.

2000 King Estate Pinot Gris Reserve

13.5% alcohol. Opened and served without decanting in everyday chardonnay glasses. Very light but clear color of hay. Nose of grapefruit, lychee, passion fruit and a hint of citrus fruits such as orange. Flavors of lychee, grapefruit, mango and papaya. Good balance of acidity and tannins. 88 points. An excellent quaffer to be drank in the short term.

Served with prosciutto wrapped sea scallops, fresh honeydew melon, white rice and a field green salad topped with a balsamic vinaigrette.

Nice choice Board-O. Mrs. WIML panned it but I enjoyed this wine. Something I don't normally drink.

I paid $15.99, no tax, plus shipping from The Wine Exchange.

I paid $14.99 locally but I think it was because they rang it up as the regular pinot gris as opposed to the reserve which would normally run almost $20.00 around these parts.

Served with a lemon garlic bread as an appetizer in run-of-the-mill white wine glasses. Didn't take notes, as it's somewhat inappropriate when having guest over, so I'll do the best I can from memory.

The color was straw yellow with nectarine, honey, and faint apple aromas. I found the lemon and red apple fruit to be somewhat subdued and dry. Found white pepper and oak on the finish. It lacked a buttery flavor the regular 00 Pinot Gris (tasted on New Years Eve) had going for it. However, it was very smooth, almost velvety. Good match with the Lemon Garlic Bread. 87/88

Paid $14.99

Alas I ended up with the 2001. Based on the previous notes it is quite a bit different from the 2000.

Winetex, please post your opinion of the 2001. I've been considering buying it.

Tasted this at the Denver offline on 1/18/03. This was a part of the warmup for the pinot tasting. Served with numerous varied appetizers, none of which I ate while drinking this glass.

I really was not taking notes yet at this time, but remember pear and citrus fruits, with a stone element towards the end. I experienced the finish as a hint of spice, with no bitterness noted.

A nice little quaffer that I would rate 86/87, putting it in the same neighborhood as the Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc/Viognier. However, I paid $8.50 for the Pine Ridge when it was the TAA wine. This wine I picked up at the winery in April, and think I paid $20.

When tasted at the winery, I thought this wine was better than it showed last night, whcih led me to ship two bottles back home. At this price, I will enjoy the remaining bottle on the deck on a hot summer day, but will not be picking up more.
