Spock..I mean Joe!!!!.. GREAT post on this wine. For some reason I never stumbled across it; kind of feel stupid. I have signed up on their mailing list and am going to start looking for it around town since I live here in WA. I have spent wayyy to much time on CA cabs and French bordeaux's and their second wines..time to look in my backyard!!!
Thank you. | | Joe ----- Wine is like potato chips around me...if it's open, it's gone.

| Oh Yea Baby..
I will decant the crap out of it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've noticed the same thing about the 2000 bordeaux's I've tried. I opened one 2000 Latuour Martillac and it was so closed the first night I left it in the decanter for two days..finished it at a wine tasting so I didn't get to see it beyond two days but, I think it still needed more time. I won't be opening another bottle for a few years.
I will be looking for the l'ecole walla walla..their wine seems to be in good supply up here in the Northwest. Nice to be in the backyard of some very good wineries!!!!!! Anthony

| | the last time i had the 00 QC iirc it showed best at around 36-48 hrs. also, the l'ecole walla walla cabs, 99 & 00, need a lot of air time at this stage in the game. | | | |

| - 2000 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon [Washington, USA] 93 pts. (4/25/2004)
First I need to rationalize opening one of these so young. I have more of this than any other QC vintage (save 01) and my only prior taste was a too-cold sample at the release weekend. Plus 01 release weekend is coming up and I wanted to calibrate my palate.
Young, tannic, and tight. Blueberry, vanilla bean on the nose. Very similar flavors on the palate with a bit of added currant and mocha flavors. This is delicious with enough air time, but obviously WAY too young. Early in the night it was a touch hot on the finish, but this seemed to dissipate with time in the decanter. I will show more patience with my other bottles.

| This stuff can be like a blueberry milkshake, but it really does rock.
- 2000 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon [Washington, USA] 92 pts. (1/10/2004)
(Tasted at the STG German tasting at Jason & Tracy's) This had an explosive nose of blueberry and some latex paint (again I found that in a young Quilceda). Unlike the other two bottles I have tasted, this one showed the heat that a lot of folks have been complaining of. Wow, this was seriously hot! On the palate there is lots of blueberry with a distinct taste of vanilla ice cream. On the finish this is showing absolutely HUGE structure and feels nowhere near ready, the least approachable of the three bottles of this I have tasted since Thanksgiving. (I successfully picked this double-blind.)
- 2000 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon [Washington, USA] 97 pts. (12/12/2003)
STG dinner at Roy's. This was clearly not Bordeaux, and tasted blind I was guessing this was Aussie Shiraz?!? (I was fishing mentally through Jason's cellar and assuming 1998 Grange.) After some initial odd notes of fish-oil blew off, this revealed a glorious nose of blueberry. On the palate this shows stunning concentration, oh my goodness is this stuff plush! It is almost painfully tannic yet so huge and good. The finish is a hint choppy but simply unreal in its power. I was amazed when the bag was pulled... (Group average 94.67)
- 2000 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon [Washington, USA] 94 pts. (11/28/2003)
Thanksgiving week leftovers with Phil, Ruth and the boys. Wow, this is awesome juice, like raspberry & violet liqueur. Violet, pain-grille, vanilla, and mint on the explosive nose. On the palate this is remarkably pure, powerful and searing with an explosion of fruit, a huge amount of acidity, and plenty of structure and oak for the long haul. I am stunned by the power of this juice. A number of folks have complained of heat, and it is there in spades. However, I find the searing, hot feel to to be more related to the firm acidity present in this wine. Despite the fact that this is so full throttled, it reminds me of the 1994 Quilceda. It needs a lot of time to settle down, but if you are sitting on a case this is worth popping. It is certainly pleasurable and still wide open right now.

| | Did any of you try a taste immediately after pulling the cork? If so, what did you think? We had a bottle with the Golitzins last Summer. Alex pulled the cork and immediately poured the wine. I found it very difficult to evaluate with no breathing time. | | | |

| Board-O, thanks for pointing that out ... again.
That's the fourth time in this thread alone that you've made essentially the same comment on it, so I think we've got the picture.
If the memory is the second thing to go, do you remember what the first one was? | | Cheers, y'all

| We might have mentioned this before, but I don't feel like looking .
QC's website has Rovani's Wine Advocate review as follows, for what it's worth. He (and Wine Spec) certainly do seem to "Advocate" holding these a while longer:
Quote:
The dark ruby-colored 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon has a nose reminiscent of a blackberry-flavored Yoplait yogurt laced with roasted oak and hints of licorice. A full-bodied wine of power and structure, it is crammed with black currants, blackberries, and spices. Its dense fruit is matched blow for blow with a muscular, firm structure. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020. Score: 94+
As for "civilian" advice, this seems to be one ofthe best threads, including many names with which we are familiar.
Enjoy!

Yes. The nose had a lot of blueberry and vanilla. The palate was very "fruity" with blueberry being the major component. Just out of the bottle it tasted like fruit juice, not wine. I have never had a barrel sample, but I was wondering if this is what they might taste like. The wine did "morph" after a long decant.

| Barrel samples are something else! Early on in the barrel I have tasted two they taste like the best grape juice you have ever had IMHO all sweet and grapey. It is very interesting how the juice changes. | | | |

| | I had my first bottle on 5/3/04. What a wine. This really is more in the Bordeaux model than California. Great balance, tons of ripe fruit, but also a mineral and floral element. It really did remind me of a 2nd growth Bordeaux. My closest comparison would be Leoville Poyferre. | | | |

| Dave,
You will have to try my 98 QC at some O/L. The nose is like a Margaux! I tried the 00 QC and thought it was so young that it reminded me of a Shiraz in some ways. I can't wait till it gets a good 6-10 years on it.

| Bob,
I should have said I tried my first bottle of 2001 Quilceda. I had the opportunity to sample 8 vintages of Quilceda several months ago. That was why I bought the 2001. Stunning stuff that develops wonderfully over time. Although I don't find the young wines to be anything like Shiraz. Maybe in comparison to the older ones, but not on a case by case basis.

| | Decanted for 2+ hours, lovely deep color, a wine of considerable heft both in appearance and on the palate. Smokey oak, cassis, and mint flavors. Sweet and creamy. RMP suggests opening this in 2008, but for those with the itch, I don’t think you need to wait that long, but it is going to get better and better. Well integrated tannins don’t overpower -- in fact, nothing overpowers in this balanced wine. 93+ points. | | Randy Sloan Match Vineyards | |

| | Nobody has had this in 5+ months??? I was actually going to send some of this off to auction and decided I needed to pull a cork before I did something so drastic. Initially closed, nothing to speak of on the nose of palate, not quite sour, but no sweet fruit at all. Two hours changed everything. Blueberry pie baby. This reminds me so much of 90's Bryant Family in a way. It isn't as layered, it isn't as balanced, it isn't as big, but the blueberry vanilla oak is there in spades. Here is the quandary, if you poured this along side the '99 there is no way in hell that I would pick the same producer, not a chance. The '99 is about stucture and cedar and blackberry, totally reminiscent of Bordeaux, this is about as similar to Bordeaux as Zinfandel is. Dimension #2, the '01 which drinks similar, but bigger, drinks very close to '00 Pichon-Baron at this age. I can't figure it out to be honest, but I ain't sending any to auction I can tell you that! Saved a half bottle for tomorrow, I go Pierre's way and give it 94+. | | | |

Huge nose of blackberry (?) and cassis, with soft licorice and spice undertones. A powerhouse on the palette as well, with nice bit of earth on the finish. A most excellent wine. 93 pts. | | Visit The Butcher Block at http://www.butcherblocktampa.com/
