| 2003 Cayuse Vineyard Syrah. En Chamberlin Vineyard, Walla Walla Valley, Washington. 14.8% alcohol. $55. Medium to dark red with scents of pepper and hung game along with overtones of smoke, plum, and minerals. Nice mouthfeel with adequate fruit and fine length. There is a persistent core of plumy fruit but overall this wine relies more on complexity than power. Light to moderate tannin and good acidity. A deftly crafted but rather unexciting wine. Christophe Baron, the proprietor, farms biodynamically and keeps yields low (two tons per acre on average). He bottles his wine without fining or filtration. Drink now to 2011. 88 points. | | | |
