1983 Chateau Ste Michelle Reserve, Benton County, Washington, Cold Creek Vineyard. 13.3%. $25 at auction.
Bottle and cork in pristine condition with cork saturated 1/8 inch from bottom, supple, not spongy. Mature red/black with just a tinge of brick throughout the wine. Great concentration of color, good clarity. On the nose it is predominately red cherry with some blacks still remaining, a kiss of oak remains, but there is also some definate acidic mature fruits, and a touch of mushroom. In the mouth the wine shows high toned red cherry notes, displays elevated acids, is medium bodied, and has a longer than expected 20+ second finish with very light, feathery tannins. Obviously the wine is past prime, but it is still hanging in there and with raviolli and red sauce the acid disappeared and it was a very nice little food wine. At this stage in the game it's drink up and 83 points, which really in my book is pretty good for a 22 year old Washington wine that probably sold for 5 or 6 dollars at release and is a couple points better than the already dieing '97 BV Rutherford that was drank last night.

This is actually a famous wine -- it was the first wine from Washington that Robert Parker called "world class". I believe he has consistently rated it 95-96 points since its release.

I wonder if you had a less-than-pristine bottle, IMO a possibility if it only sold for $25 at auction. I tried this last year and felt the wine needed another 3-5 years in the cellar!

If the bottle was ever exposed to heat you sure would never have known it from the condition of the cork and container. I had no idea of the history of the wine. Very interesting. I'd try it again for sure at that price!
