2001 Baer Ursa Washington (WIML88,NOWA,NOWS)

Tasted October 8, 2005 at an offline. Opened and served immediately in Spiegelau Magnum glasses. Dark ruby to garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Smoky nose with some poultry seasoning and raspberry. What a combination! Flavors of raspberry, cherry and red licorice. Drink over the short term. Pass is my recommendation.

Interesting note. I like this more than you did, gave it a 90 at the one time where I wrote down my note- I think it was more of an 89 the last time I tasted, but didn't record a note......http://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp?iWine=11423

At $24 though, even at 88 points that you gave the wine, it is a decent value.

I am curious to know more about what you didn't like about the wine? Your tasting note is helpful, but really only talks about flavors- nothing about balance, structure, acidity, mouth feel, etc.

Acidity was almost dominating. Tannins where there on the mild side. Overall it was in balance discounting the acidity a bit but seemed primary on the palate and nose...no secondary aromas or flavors to speak of. It was OK, just didn't wow in any way.

Interesting commentary. I really enjoyed the 2000, but the 2001 seemed (to my palate) to be overoaked. I'm holding my remaining 2001s to see if it comes into balance, but I'm not sure it will.

The 2000 rocked.

Thanks WIML- that helps!

I have a couple of the 02's but have not tasted from bottle yet. My barrel sample taste was a much bigger wine than the 01 or 00. During the dinner we tried all three side by side and I liked them in this order 02, 01, 00. I thought the 00 was showing awkward- and hot.

Reading back the notes of this tasting (mine and other folks- all available on Cellartracker) The 2000 is Lance's least favorite - his and some other's hierarchy matches mine.. but another taster had them completely opposite- all tasted from the same bottle. Such a subjective thing, this wine hobby.
