DrT, plenty of time ahead. This is still pretty young and oaky. I have had it three times, once from a restaurant list, once at DeLille and once in a tasting. Wait a few more years. I'm sitting on three myself and in no hurry.
  • 1999 DeLille Cellars Chaleur Estate - Red Mountain, Washington, USA (12/21/2003)
    Dinner with Amy & Justin at Val d'Isere. $160 CD. Very high-toned with strong initial VA, but amazingly this settled down and showed a more exotic, floral, spicy character more reminiscent of Cab Franc. On the palate this shows a lot of caramel and Asian spice with very plush mouthfeel, deeply layered with ample structure but bursting in fruit. I am stunned by how forward this wine was even though it was clearly holding back oodles. Lots of baby fat, plenty of love, quite exotic. (91 pts.)
  • 1999 DeLille Cellars Chaleur Estate - Red Mountain, Washington, USA (12/7/2003)
    Tasted at Patrick's single blind 1999 Washington tasting. Somewhat herbal with distinct vanilla notes. Very spicy on the palate, candied with dill appearing after this spends time in the glass. This has some serious oak to integrate. Powerful finish. I thought this was the Leonetti. (90 pts.)
  • 1999 DeLille Cellars Chaleur Estate - Red Mountain, Washington, USA (11/2/2003)
    DeLille Cellars 7th annual Paulee de Woodinville (Woodinville, WA, USA): (**) Poured from Magnum along with the squab course. Savage tannins, very pure fruit, painfully young, lots of wood still to be integrated. This has all the pieces, it just needs to settle down and knit in the bottle. No hurry on this. I wouldn't go near this wine for 5 years minimum and probably closer to 10.

2001 Ross Andrew- 89- Was tasted a little cold and needs some time to come around. Not as good as the 2000, but should be a nice drink in a year.

2002- 93 I really enjoyed this, although it is a bit young. Lots of vibrant fruit, good balance.




I also got a chance to swing by the Ross Andrew release party, and I agree with Smaug's comments.
I gave the 2001 a 90 (but I was huddled under the heater with Bob Betz and his mother so maybe it was the extra warmth!) The clear winner for me was the 2002, this was special stuff.

I have a question regarding ageabilty. The 2001 was so approachable now, is there any consensus on a drinking window?

Dr. T - I always think of Richard Gere when I write that - the '99 Chaleur is the top vintage in my book. No need to hurry it, especially if you've only one bottle.

RA's '01 left me scratching my head a bit...it was tasting very fine, but was lacking something and I think that something is its ability to mature. The '02 packed a punch that will stand the test of time, but I'd say the '01 is a cradle to be robbed (in a good way).

Eric - $160 - - even in CD that seems a bit much.

Hey, isn't the Canadian stuff Monopoly money? It was a restaurant list. I agree that it was a bit over 2x markup, but a lot of stuff up in Whistler is exorbitant. Anyway, it was worth a try.

BTW, I have higher thoughts on the Ross Andrew 2001. It just needs a bit of time.

Well here is my thinking. I have had the 1999 three times now, and each time I have tasted it I have found it to be bigger and brawnier than the last. The pretty, sleek little cab I first tasted is actually a big bully in disguise...

Well, I have tried the 2001 twice now. The first time around it seemed fairly compact, but on Sunday I found a lot more there. I think this baby is at least 5 years away, and I think it is going to pick up a lot of weight. I could be totally pulling this out of my butt of course, but I'be got half a case of the 2001, so I am going to learn for myself. I will probably try one more soon, just so I can spend an evening or two following a bottle.

Had a 2000 DeLille Chaluer Estate this weekend. Don't have long, descriptive tasting notes, but it was a VERY enjoyable wine. Was a classic blend with that smooth, cherry/dark fruit flavor and a nice finish. Intriguing thing is that it went REALLY well with pretty much every dish we had in a chef's special sampler that included everything from salumi to chicken to sirloin. Also had a 2001 Woodward Canyon Artist Series cab which was much heavier and still very tannic. I probably wouldn't touch it for another 3 or 4 years if I had additional bottles.

I liked the 2000 RA as a ready to go table wine. Personally I think the 2001 will peak at 1-3 years from now, but I have also been known to be wrong. The 2002 is a 5-10 year wine.

Re: the 1999 Chaleur.. I see this as a ten year wine. Last year I had a 94 CE and it SANG- I see the 1999 as being similar and expect I will open my last two in 2007 and 2009. It is also very nice now though.

Seriously, I appreciate your wisdom. I would've pegged the window similair to Smaug (2-3 years) but unlike Smaug, I'm probably wrong more than right.

I'll look forward to hearing your observations.
