| A wine shop near me sent me an email that they have the 2000 QC on sale for $64 bottle...sounds like a good price (still - my rule is anything over $50 better be pretty damn good...) - but I thought the 2000 was an off vintage compared to 99 & 01-03 etc....should I pick up a few at that price?
I have one bottle of the 99, 2 of the 01 and am hoping for 6 of the 02 (was hoping for 6 of the 01 and I got 2...)....never had QC (except their lessor red - whcih was just OK - nothing at all special) - just going on the rep/hype regarding their top bottling....seems like it is (will be...one day...) some very fine juice...

| | there is no way you can compare their red blend 2nd bottling to the real stuff. the cab is awesome, even in 2000. | | | |

2000 was a very good year in Washington state, why the qualifier?

| | I'm guessing anthony's reply based on what I've read. I only tasted the 2000 at the winery in July, 2003, with the owners, who popped the cork and poured, no breathing time. I believe Parker rated the other vintages more highly than the 2000, though the 2000 did get an excellent review and score. | | | |

not sure why i added that i guess in the back of my mind was that i thought the 01 was much better, even though i think i scored the 00 around 95 pts.

| I'm bringing an 01 to an offline this weekend. What do you recommend as the decant time?
12 hours? decant and back into the bottle the night before?
Thanks in advance, WN | | | |

| Personally, unless I'm pretty familiar with a particular wine and how it evolves over time, I'd err on the side of under-decanting. You can always spend time with it and let it air in the glass, but you can't undo air time. I'd start with 2-3 hours in an open top decanter, then spend as much time with it as you can. | | I think it's going to show better with 6-8 hours of air, but I agree with Eric that I wouldn't risk over-decanting. I'd start sipping after it's been decanted about 2 hrs. | | | |

| | The last I heard, the 01 Quilceda is pretty shut down right now. So I'd considering finding another 01 cab to bring and letting this one sleep for 5 more years. | | Ladd Cellars | |

I have read that. Normally, I wouldn't tap one of these until I heard that it was waking up. However, we are doing a vertical this weekend covering 96 to 02, and the 01 is my contribution. I'm just trying to figure out the best way for a sleeping wine to show its best.
Opinions cluster around 2-3 hours and then around 6-8 hours. Unfortunately, I'm not consuming this at home where I can sip it at my leisure every so often and check on it as it opens up. There will be 8 of us having dinner at a friends house where we'll do a blind flight of all the QC's.
Should be a fun evening, but not sure how well an 01 will show. I just want it to have the best chance to strut its stuff.

Sounds like a great evening -- can't wait to see some notes! I'd split the difference of opinion on the decant time and go with 3-4 hours.

Quilceda Creek 1996-2002 vertical (Chicago suburbs): Now we're talking. Violets and concentrated dark red cherry. Started soft but gained depth. Really started to kick in by the end of the night. Our host was kind enough to let me take home the bottle with maybe 6 ounces in it. It was holding strong and better in some ways the next day. Great length with layers of dark red fruits.
On the day of our dinner, I poured into the decanter about 1:30 pm and gave it an hour. I poured it back into the bottle and left it uncorked for another 2 hours. Recorked the bottle and left for dinner. Took the cork out around 6:30. We started pouring these around 8:30 or so? Could have used more air time. Great upside potential. (94 pts.)

Decanted and allowed to sit for 5 hours. Nice nose and mouthfeel, but as one of many bottles, no detailed notes taken. When put side-by-side with an Ehlers Cab Franc and tasted blind, 3 of 4 incorrectly guessed the CF as the QC; indicator of a solid CF on the part of Ehlers, and the strong fruit-forward nature of the young QC. (92 pts.)

| Wow I sure hate to write this one. I've had QC's on a few occasions, and always loved them. I've been buying for a few years, and finally opened my first.
From first glass to last, it was pure diesel. I pretty much forced myself to drink it all, though the preceding KB Koplen Pinot numbed me down a bit.
It was unpleasant. I can't imagine what was wrong with this bottle -- I've had some outrageously corked wines before, and this was pretty different. It wasn't oxidize, I'd kept it at 55 degrees it's whole life, and the cork was in good shape. It's like the bottle was recycled from an epoxy-lined fuel tank.
Oh well I'm sure my next bottle can't be this bad.........

| I just bought several bottles of the '01 and the '04 Quilceda Creek Cab.
I opened a bottle of the '01 the other night and simply loved it. It was full of rich luscious gushing flavors of raspberry jam, cherry/blueberry milkshake. It was very viscous and juicy with velvety smooth tannins and fine structure and acidity. Some people say these wines are unbalanced, and while this is the first QC I have tasted, I found it to be balanced very nicely. Yes, there is a ton of brambly mountain berry fruit, but there is considerable backbone and wonderful hints of pomegranite, smoky mesquite, a creamy vanilla frappacino, and rich aromatic pipe tobacco. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am looking forward to future bottles. 95-97 points
I hope the 2004 QC Cab is as good or better than the '01
ciao!
