| LCC, The 97 Rancho Zabaco was my first example of a 'rich' zin. It was a killer. I have one left (for old time's sake) but I fear it may be over the hill. The 98 was blah - more like the Heritage Vines, with little or no depth. The 99 is more like the 97. Maybe 2 points lower, but a very good wine to pop on any occasion. I have a dozen or so in the cellar. We drank 4 bottles (among others) on Christmas Eve, and I quickly replenished my stash, since the 2000 is probably hitting the shelves, and I doubt it will stand up to the 99 (although I hope I'm wrong). | | | |

| The Zabaco 99 Chiotti Vinyard Zin was one of the best Zins I have had out of the 98, 99, and 00 vintages. When this wine was bottled under the Gallo of Sonoma label Parker used to speak very highly of it. The 2000 is on the shelf now and I havn't tried it but I will get one soon. It costs less then $20.

| LCC asked me to add this here.
2000 Falesco Vitiano
Parker rating of 90 and the cost of about $8 or $9 per bottle. Blend of 1/3 Cabernet 1/3 Merlot and 1/3 Sangiovese.
This has shed a bit of it's fruit since my last visit. Much more noticeable tannins and acid. Improved a bit with air, but overall not as enjoyable as before, but still paired well with the food. Although I am definitely not an expert in Italian wine, I would say drink up, this won't age well.
The 2001 is now probably replacing most of the 2000's on the shelves now, and would be worth a try. Something like 300,000 cases produced.

| I have 2 Italians I've enjoyed:
Santa Anastasia '00 Nero d'Avola(varietal) (88pts) $9-10: Here's a nice red you "simply cannot refuse" from Sicily - A medium bodied Italian red with wonderful texture and fruit. Not overly acidic, a good mid-week quaffer with pizza.
Zenato Ripassa '99 from Veneto (91pts) $18: A great red wine made from Corvina (and other grapes) made from the lees of Amarone wines. Supple and full, a fantastic red. Beaten the pants out of the '00 Rosso di Montalcinos and '99 Chianti Classicos I have tried this year in the $20-30 range.

I have one for you to try, its from Chile 2001 Two Brothers "Big Tatoo Red". It's a blend of Cab, Syrah and Merlot. They had it at WL for about $7 after discount. Picked up because I needed 1 more bottle for 12, and thought the bottle was cool and neat story on the back 50 cents goes to cancer charity in memory of the Two Brother's mom who died, and it was cheap. I had posted notes on the other board but looks like they are gone. I recall it had ripe fruit, some earthy mint qualites and was an easy drinker. I think the one brother works for a wine importer or distributer or something. I am going to pick another one up next time I'm there to see if I was right at the time and not that it was something that seemed good at the time because of the price. I think I gave it a mid 80's score

| I am adding the to the list, 2002 Catena Zapata Mendoza Chardonnay 13.5%
The wine can be found for $12 and I rated it 89 points.
This is alway a sound by but the 2002 is Catena's best yet. Sourced from to individule vineyards at extreme elevations in Argentina, there were around 25,000 cases made.
The flavor profile is dominated by tropical fruits, Mango, and cocconut rum. The oak flavors are powerful but the wine is not heavy and clumsy. Instead it is rich and light, like a good croisant should be. The fruit flavors are clean and there is excellent balance. It is surely a "new world stlye" but not over done. This is one of the best "value" Chardonnay's currently on the market. | | | |

| | TCK: Well, the great MudPuppy just put 2 of those chards on hold for me. Thanks. Honestly, I have not been successful @ finding any descent chards that I liked below the $20.00 range. Can't wait to try this 1. | | | |
