...How much does that really matter? I think A LOT. Otherwise, why is someone like Togni or Ridge MB, NOT considered a "CULT" Wine. Production, Production, Production...I think.

I think that you would be hard-pressed to find a better Wine (& for the $$$, QPR, fogetaboutit) than the above mentioned 2 Wines.

...Ratings also, Yes.

Which brings me to point #2. These 2 Wines are, in my opinion, are also ALWAYS UnderRated.

P.S.: Now that Harlan is upping Production, Good Bye to the "Cult"-label, I guess...

Extremely limited production is a must however the main reason why Togni and Montebello are not cult wines is because they have been made for decades. True cult wines were a phenomena of the nineties.

How come they do NOT get the "respect/" or coverage or attention as some of those others then (not that Togni cares, I am sure)?

Their stories have already been told. Togni did get a nice write up in WS recently. Paul Draper was man of the year in Decanter a year or two back. They get covered but both wineries are "old hat" to a certain extent.

lcc: I'm not sure how much more respect you think Ridge MB deserves. All I know is that it carries a triple-digit price tag, and people scamble to buy it. Seems to me that this is all the "respect" the owner needs.
Beta testing a new signature.

I guess (to the both of you). But, would Not mind if both of those Wines got a little more respect. May be, I am nit-picking. To me, both of these are 2 of the GREATs.

When I was last up at Togni picking up wine, I told Philip that I had recently had a bottle of the '91 and that I though it was great (which I did). He actually yelled at me for drinking the wine too early. Possibly he is also not nice to the press?

This is funny. He is a character, isn't he? A dying breed (from the old school).

I visited him this summer. The guy is so unique. So, interesting. A real Winemaker. All he cares about is Winemaking. That is all.

He knows just about every restaurant that has his Wine. And, just about every store that gets his Wine. Amazing. We spent over 2 hours there. And, obviously, you know, that he is Not the most "talkative" person. BUT, his wife is a real nice lady. She was so nice & gave us a lot of Wine to sample. Including 2001 Barrel---WOW. And, the Dessert Wine.

I told them that I had the '92. He also "questioned" me on that. He said it was too early.

Funny story (he told): His daughter (who is working with them now) goes to a Restaurant in San Fran. She sees a 1999 Togni on the Wine Menu. So, she tells the Wine Manager, "I think this is too early to open/offer this bottle." The Wine Manager blows her off & tells her that he knows better. Hmmmmm.

She comes home (if you visited him, you know what Home is). Very discrete place. Tells her father, Philip, what happened. He calls the place the next day & tell them that, "my daughter..." & says that you will Not get another bottle from me again.

Funny story #2 (about the Press/Commercial Advertising): We come for an appointment. He looks @ us (5 people, young). And says, "...So, you guys are into Wine?...And, just stares @ us..." We do Not know what to say, "I say, YES." He says, "...by the way, this is your 1st time here, correct?. We do Not sell TShirts, Hats, nothing..." I look @ my watch, & say to myself, "5 minutes, we are OUTAHERE." His wife came over, we started talking about Wine, took a tour...blah, blah, blah.... Over 2 hours later, we left the place.

A visit to their place is an experience. A throw-back to the "old days". I cherished it. A real Winemaker...from the "old school". I like that...

...I visited a LOT of Wineries over the years. But, this was really different. An experience.

When I first started collecting in the 70's, it seemed like Ridge had a cult following, although the best wines were considered to be Heitz, BV GDL, Mondavi, Chappellet, Mayacamas, Chateau Montelena and Stags Leap. Diamond Creek was considered to be the most overpriced wine (some things don't change). At that time, the wines that were good in the 60's like Krug and Inglenook were on a decline. It's too bad that I dropped out of wines for 20 years, I would have been one of the first ones on all of the cult mailing lists since I followed the wineries religiously then.
