OK, I'm setting up my new cellar.  The issue for me is that the racks are all two deep.  Since I normally track in Excel, I'm not sure how to track bottle positions.  Does anyone else here have the same problem?  Normally, I would track something in the top left in A1, the row below it in A2, etc.  But with two bottles per position, should A1 be the front (or back?) of the top left position, and the bottle in the back(front?) in A2.  Or should I track front and back bottles on different sheets?

Granted, this is an extremely geeky question.  How would you solve this problem?

I don't have that type of racking but, you could use A1A. As in colum A, row 1, position A or B depending on if it is the front bottle or the rear.

I didn't solve the problem. I numbered the bins from A01-T14 and just accepted that there would be two wines per bin. Doesn't really matter whether it's the front or the back, you'll always have to remove the front one anyway. Longer bottles (Karl Lawrence, Don Melchor) always go at the back since they won't fit 2 and still be able to close the door. Otherwise, where possible I put two of the same wine in a bin.

Since I always keep the same wine together, I ignore the issue and give each (double deep) slot one number.  Each section of the cellar gets an x00 number, then the slots are numbered from the top.  So, a column might start at the top with 235.1 going down to 235.15.  The one small disadvantge is when you have an odd number of bottles, you waste a position.  Alternatively, just give two wines the same bin number.

I labeled the shelves A-Z and the positions are numbered with the lower numbers taking up the back row and the larger numbers in front. To pulll bottle B3 for example, I remove B10 and reach back.

Does it matter? A1 and A1 are close enough. I think you're trying to overcomplicate this. After all, if you go to A1 to pull a bottle and it's not in front wouldn't you naturally look at the second bottle in that rack?

Joe - If I could do that, sure.  But excel only allows one entry in cell A1.  So, if I keep the front bottles on a different sheet than the back bottles, that would work.  Or like kpak, keeping them offset byt the number of rows (interesting approach).

I'm going to divide my cellar into 4 quadrants (aren't you glad I didn't say a different number of quadrants?) .  One quadrant will be whites, one will be cabs, one Pinot/Syrah, and the fourth will be meritage.

Incidentally, I have the 1900 bottle model... and it really only holds 1528 in the racks.   The remaining area is not sufficient to hold an additional 30 cases, unless you have no interest in being able to access your wine.  This is deceptive advertising.

That is an interesting approach. Are you building a map of the cellar?  In my spreadsheet there is no cell "A1".  Doing what Joe suggests I might have two entries:
Bob's Pinot bin A1
Randy's Cab bin A1

I've never thought to search by bin number

Just because I'm that kind of guy and like complicating things even more...

Why not use two sheets (one for front, one for back) and then filter the data using a pivot table, which would dump all the data into one useable interface and display both results for A1. Then, depending on how much fun you want to have, you can filter based on all kinds of different stuff.

OK. you're trying to do this visually. Got it. I assumed you would have a listing of wines instead and a column for each wine to indicate it's bin number in which case that works. I'm the exact opposite of what you're doing. I know what wine I want before I walk into the cellar...I just need to know where it's stored once I get there. A simple bin number is enough for me to get it done.

It'll do exactly what you want, eh?  I know, I know.  You "creative" guys are used to doing all the hard work and then having someone in Redmond figure out how to make it a little better and go to market with it, eh?

Excel will allow more than one entry in Cell A1.  What I do is label the slots in my racks as 1-16, going from top to bottom, and A-E going from left to right.  The bottle in the front of slot 1A is listed in CellarTracker (and in my wine inventory list) as 1A-F. (With the "F" signifyng "Front".)  The wine behind it is 1A-B ("Back").  Unlike Bob, I do not always pair up my wines.  The one in front could be a Pinot, and the one in back a Cab.  But if I do have the same wine paired up in the same slot, then the entry would say 1A-FB indicating that this particular wine is in both the front and back.

In the visual spreadsheet that I have created, I type in the name of the wine in the front first, and then just keep hitting the space bar until the cursor drops down to the next line of text. (You have to have your cell alignment set to "wrap text"). This way you can get more than one wine in each cell.

When I am all done, my wine list will read:
2004 Screaming Crow Cabernet--5--$75--1A-FB; 2B-F; 4D-FB.
This tells me that I have 5 bottles at $75, and they are stored as follows: two bottles in slot 1A in both the front and back positions; one bottle in the front of slot 2B, and two bottles in slot 4D in both the front and back positions.

On my visual spreadsheet, Cell 1A will read:
2004 Screaming Crow
2004 Screaming Crow

Cell 2-B might read:
2004 Screaming Crow
2005 August East

If you are interested, you can PM your e-mail adress and I can send you a page from my visual inventory as it is already set up and ready to go. I could delete my wines and send you what amounts to a blank form that you could then fill in with your wines.

Take a look at www.cellartracker.com as all the work has already been done.

No affiliation other than using it for my own cellar.
