Hi all,
I'm new to fine wines as well as this forum...but I thought I'd jump right in and say hello and also ask a question. I recently won two bottles of wine at a charity auction. They are 1978 and 1979 vintages. Aside from the Chateau named above it also says Pauillac on the label. I assume this is French Bordeaux from the vineyard that borders Lafite. What I don't know is if the wines are past peak, were considered  good vintage years and the approximate value today.

I would like to know these things prior to tasting them. Hopefully they were stored correctly. Thanks for any input on my wines.
Bob

Both of those years were somewhat unremarkable, quality-wise, but both of these wines, particularly the '78, have the potential to be enjoyable wines if they were well-kept. Duhart Milon is a fourth-growth that fell into serious disrepair after WWII before being purchased by the Lafite Rothschilds, who replanted most of the estate and rebuilt the facilities.

Prices on these wines probably varies widely, since they're not important enough to have been aged and traded in large quantities. Cellartracker shows a winebid recent average of $40 for the '78 but the only listing I see at wine-searcher is almost $100. The '79 barely registers on the Internet, with a winebid average of less than $25 and no wine-searcher listings.

Buying older wines at auction can be fantastic if one is realistic about expectations: old wines may be corked, mistreated, or just plain over the hill. But they also have the potential to be very memorable, and can often offer "interesting" or "evocative" as a substitution for "great", in a way that young wines rarely do.

Welcome to the board!
