OK, so when I was in the biz, in the early 80s, we knew what a crappy red Bordeaux vintage was. Remember 1980? 1984? Well, I just opened my last '97, and I thought to myself "Man, this wine sucks". And I do not speak of little experience...I have tasted over 20 Bordeaux wines from this vintage, and they have been almost uniformly awful. After reading all of the glowing reports for the last 5 years from all of the reviewers on more recent vintages, I was wondering if anybody is willing to come out and say "the years of thin, watery, cold weather, overpriced Bordeaux are over." I mean, yes, I'll buy the fact that even though the Bordelais have been making wine for several centuries, it is really only since Robert Parker came on board that they realized how to make good wine consistenly vintage after vintage. :-P But do we have another 1997 in our future? And at 2005 prices? As Eve Harrington said, "it's was getting so that I could not tell the real from the unreal." No critic will likely come out and say "this is another 97", but with all the wine blogs and cellar tracker, will we be more informed? Thoughts? |
