Never heard of "mega purple" or "ultra red" until yesterday when I read an article that quickly mentioned wine additives.  The most disturbing thing is the article also stated that any winery choosing to use either of these additives doesn't have to specify they do on the label.Â

Since my knowledge of these additives is limited to what I just read, I was wondering if anyone on VC could provide a little bit more information about them.

They are both 100% grape product concentrates produced from a teinturier varietal called Rubired. They are used to add color, and some claim mouthfeel and even perceived sweetness to the wines.

Teinturier...those are the grapes with colored juice, right?

Also, are either of these additives used to bump up sugar content to increase alchohol while fermenting juice from inferior grapes?

Yep, red juice and pulp. The most well known being Alicante Bouschet
