Finally got around to creating a Squires account.  I knew they required people to use real names, but "no gmail registrations" and "fax us a copy of your ID"?!

I suggested a couple users from this site who could vouch for me, but one doesn't have enough posts, and the other relationship (sales transaction) wasn't good enough--I guess it's true that cashing my checks isn't the same as knowing me, but...

It's not so much that I can't send them my id (though it's inconvenient, certainly) that it seems like a generally unreasonable demand, not to mention establishing a weirdly adversarial tone.   I may or may not get around to doing it Mark's way.  We'll see.

Geeze!  Don't tell him that.  You'll never get on.

Seamus, I would vouch for you but I probably don't have enough posts and/or the sales trans aren't good enough. Seems like a lot of hurdles.

On the other hand I haven't really ticked off anyone there YET.

I'm dying to ask - what does the title of this thread mean?

I guess.

I don't think you can lurk once he has his death grip on your IP address.    You can only access from a different computer then....
and how do I know this?

Weird. I've got a Squires account that I use every once in a blue moon, access it from multiple computers (4) with multiple IPs (minimum of 2) and have never had an issue or needed to submit ID.

That said, I'm not overly impressed with the ego-fest there. Some unbelievably knowledgeable people but good god.

"Baleeted" is just a silly corruption of "deleted". I don't think I'm "banned"; I haven't had any trouble reading the board since. I think he just deleted the account as basically not properly registered.

The whole thing is just silly.

Fax ID... Wow!  Call me weird but I think it's a good idea.  They have a "real name" policy that works very well.

I wonder how long Mark has been requesting this.  I joined eBob in 2002 and really have not even heard of this policy.

"Things" have been "quiet" around the boards for a while but occasionally tempers fly.  There are people "banned" from this forum but I do know of a couple of them that have re-registered under an alias.  And then there are those that have two different personas registered on the boards.  That can't happen at eBob.  If someone is banned that's pretty much it.

I don't mind people using a "handle" for their name.  The ones I care about I know or can find out.  My pet peeve is not knowing where people are from (I mean like what city they live in).  I'm not sure why but it really bugs me.  At eBob it is required to list that information.

Sure there are ways to get around any rules but the large majority of the people play by the rules and it IMO makes for a more comfortable place.  Most people making a post under their "real" names are likely to be more "civil" than someone who thinks because they are using a pseudonym they are responsible for what they post.

Besides, what difference does it make.  Do you honestly think that some crook is going to look at your name of these boards and because they also know what city you live in they're going to find your house and steal your wines?  Or even worse get some purple paint and write on your front lawn "wine lover"?

a problem.  A member of this board told me about this site because I have this real interest in wines. The only way I can come in and read everything from you  is by usint that member (a neighbor) computer since I can't get service where I live.
So if I do somethig wrong on a board, they can look up the ip address and ban the neighbor even if we are two different people?

This is not a problem really.  Just don't do (as you put it) something wrong.

Oh well.  Five minutes after I post this I go over to the Freeman Wine post in "Wine Commerce" and Dave and Dan are throwing bricks at each other.  What really irks me is that Brad shuts the post down before I can put in my 2¢.Â

Relative to this thread...  These two guys obviously have differing opinions.Â

I wish I knew Dave better but I don't.  I'm sure I must have seen some of his 2000+ posts but when I read them Dave is just a non-descript name and I can't really remember what he has posted in the past.  If I knew his last name and/or where he lived I could differentiate him from other non-discript posters and it would help me to get a handle on his thinking relative to wines.

With Dan he has a last name.  To me there is a big difference between a poster named "Dan" versus a poster named "Dan Baily".  It is much easier to follow his posts.  I know what to expect (well mostly).  I know he is very knowledgable and can be rather dogmatic.  He does know his wines though and has personal insight in the wine/winery business.  I don't know "anything" about Dave other than what he has said in that particular thread.  I can see that their philosophies on this particular subject are 180° apart.  There is nothing wrong with either of their philosophies.  I know what Dan's is and now I now I think I know what Dave's is.  It is just a shame that the only reason I will now remember who Dave is because of a rant that he made.  With Dan I wasn't surprised.  With Dave I was.

There was a funny thread on eBob, which would have been nondescript but for a fellow named Ty Webb that had several posts on the thread.  Another poster called him out noting that "isn't Ty Webb that character from Caddyshack"?  Unfortunately, Ty never reappeared on the thread to say whether it was just a coincidence.  I have heard of people that have more than one identity on eBob though.  If Mark is requiring faxed ID, then he has really taken it to a new level.

David, we met at the Harris Estate picnic.  If you ever find yourself in our nation's capital, let me know and we can renew acquaintances!Â

The whole thing can be very strange (registering on Squires' Board.) This will explain a few things you may not know about the process.... WineParanoia

"Baleeted" I read this as "banned and deleted" although the spelling doesn't look right. Shouldn't it be "baleted".
