Sorry.  This might be best added to an old post, but searching is too difficult Â

Has this already been posted/discussed?

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is... .ps - friends don't let friends eat farmed salmon.

Not that I've seen. The search for the perfect enclosure continues. Personally, I still prefer cork. The worst are the synthetic corks; or as a poster used to refer to them, "fake corks". In my experience they have not held up well at all. Next are screw tops; the aging cycle seems different. I wish all wineries treated their corks as seriously as Shafer; Elias spent a good 5 minutes telling me about how he searches for the best corks, and it is the most challenging part of his job.

Of course, for 95% of the populace, that opens a wine within 2 hours of purchase, the closure issue is irrelevant. The article does make the point that detecting sulfides is easier than corkiness. Most of the time corked wines are simply "missing" to my nose. I can't detect the TCA, but I can't find any fruit present.

I have definitely noticed an increase in reductive notes in wine under screw cap, but this is easily remedied through decanting...

I still refer to them as fake corks because that is in fact what they are.  I do buy one wine with fake corks every vintage - La Sirena Moscato d'Azul but I wish it was screwcapped.

Many of those fake corks trashed my corkscrews so for that reason alone I don't like them. Screwcap seems the way to go for wines that will probably be consumed in the short term.
