Hey Everyone,

Now that the forums have been upgraded, a lot of fixes and usability features have been fixed or added.

I'd love to hear your opinions on how the forums are working for you.

What's difficult to do?
What's really easy and working well for you?
What doesn't work at all for you?
Anything you really like?
Anything you really hate?
What are the MUST HAVE features that will get you posting more?
What is making you post less?

I'd really like to get Vinocellar hopping again....  Any suggestions?

Thank you everyone for your input....  lay it on me!

It looks like the 'jump to last unread' still isn't working consistently... at least with topics with multiple pages.

Everything seems to be working good for me. I can access the site, and have the same user experience on both Windows XP and Mac OSX machines.

All of the features seem to be working properly.

I like the new look as well. Funny how every time I log on, I have an urge to pour a glass of something red....go figure.

1. Had to log back in this morning. I seem to get "remembered" about 75% of the time.

3. Is there a way to set up a default font style? I seem to be set on x-small and have to manually change to small each time. My eyes aren't what they used to be, so x-small doesn't cut it for me.  That said, I think as a whole I don't like the font size options. The small is probably too big for most people. (If you all hate it, let me know and I won't use it any more). And the x-small seems too small. I'd like to see a "Goldilocks" font that is "just right".

4. Not that there is anything that can be fixed about it, but the content on each page is so complex that reading posts and composing replies on my Treo appears to be a thing of the past. Download time per page is prohibitive, and most of the time I get a "Page too large to display" error message. A shame because I love to catch up with VC while riding the rails, waiting in airports or sitting in boring meetings.

Lest you think I have nothing but complaints, I really like what you have done. Especially the new way that search results come out.

Beta testing a new signature.

Hey Budman. Yea, it seems older posts before the upgrade were "reset" in some way... unfortunate side effect of the upgrade. Hopefully all the new threads (and threads you've already gone into after the upgrade) will behave as they should.

incident, good to hear! Especially good to hear that it works on your Mac OSX machines... curious what browser you are using?

JimmyV - I agree... x-small is definitely quite small. I'll look into making the change to a higher point size for the default text.
Good news regarding posting from your TREO however. I'm going to be implementing a system where you can reply to subscribed posts via email... and it will automatically post a reply.

Essentially, each forum topic will have it's own email address you can "post" to... and it's smart enough to know if it's a reply to a subscribed email, or a new post. I'll detail how to use this feature after I get it setup.

Thanks for the feedback so far... keep it coming!

Regarding the red.... yea, I also agree. I'll slowly be making some more changes to the "skin" of the site.

can you set me up to the jump to the last thread deal. I can't find the option.

Before you could click on a thread if you wanted to read all the pages scrolling. now you can only do 1 page of a thread at a time. Am I missing something?

Hey winebrat, you are all set. For future reference, click on "My Profile" near the top right of the forums, and then "edit" your profile. Options are near the bottom. I agree it should be more obvious.

The "view all posts" option was on the OLD forum... I've requested this feature be added to this new forum software. Hopefully the next release will have it, but at this point since this one is so new, I have no idea when that will be.

Most things are working well for me now.  Haven't had to login for awhile.

I still am having trouble figuring out how to search again, but I'm sure I can/will learn.

What is making you post less?

I think that the key thing is achieving a critical mass of posters again. When traffic is low there are less things of interest to read and less reason to stop by. I have noticed a big change in the past few months.

I'm with Dave.  From a user stand point traffic is way down and there is very little of interest being posted to keep me interested and posting consistently on the site as a result.

I think with the last update and recent comments from people, Vinocellar has turned that corner in "usability"...   and more improvements are to come  (going to soften the colors too!)...   So perhaps its time to starting trying to drive some more traffic this way.

I think these are the main factors that drive traffic
- mailer season
- vintage buying opportunity (Bordeaux 2000 for example)
- newbies to wine
- controversial threads
- wine events

I think we are missing a lot of these on the site right now.

James, your drivers for site traffic are right on point.  We have all of them in spades though.

- mailer season - check.  Spring mailers have come and gone just like clockwork.  Bloody as ever.  No change there.

- vintage buying opportunity - can you say 2005 vintage?  2005 Burgundy?  2005 Bordeaux?  2005 Loire?  2005 Germany?  The list goes on.  There are multiple threads on each of these topics on eBob and elsewhere

- newbies - I'm a relative newbie to Burgundy

- controversial threads - natch

- wine events - Doc is in town as well speak. Imbibing away.  Everyone drive safely.

In addition to driving traffic is keeping it up.

If I may suggest, each forum should have a moderator. Someone who could start new discussions when necessary and keep threads moving in a positive direction.

Brad,
This version is a vast improvement over the last.
One question, is there a way I can change the color of the font on this site? The grey looks cool, but IMHO, black is much easier to read.

GD, that's a change I'd have to make globally... but perhaps it's a good change. I'll be experimenting with this skin during this week... I'll also change the default size.
