It's one thing to have it in electronic inventory but another to sort through the racks and boxes. I realized that unless we become raving alcoholics (which we are not) there's no way we will ever drink all of that wine.

Another realization is that there are at least 5 cases of wine that I really have no interest in drinking because of taste preferences. These I chalk up to my weakness a few years ago to the "echo chamber" i.e. "everyone else is buying it boy I need to." These are good wines but they don't hold much appeal for me.

If you are in cellar ramp-up mode don't let this happen to you. Look for a wine sale soon.

I think this happens to any serious wine collector at some point. Tastes change.

So are their any Rhones on the list????

No Rhones, Burgundy or Champagne. I guess that tells you what I like these days.

Maybe it is a selection of the finest Ruinite, Mateus, Lancers, Sutter Home and Canei from the 80's

Then it's got to be what just about everyone starts with and gets a little crazy about, Cabs.

Ruinite and it feels so good...

I hear ya - reduced my cellar by 9 cases about two months ago, and it is more reflective on what I am drinking these days.

This happens to everyone eventually (sometimes more than once...) One caveat to keep in mind is that tastes change and can change back again.

Witness the auction sites when they offer selections from "a well respected collector" or something like that. I think most collectors eventually want to sell or donate some of their collection whether it is because of changing tastes, making room for something else, or even just that turnover is part of collecting.

A DavidN Dump

Do a search for "dump" username "davidn". Some of them are quite amusing.

Once my cellar construction is completed and my wine is all in one place, I need to do a serious reassessment. 80% of what I drink is Pinots and Syrahs, yet 50% of my cellar is Cabs. Oy!!!

Thanks for the post...I certainly have been in denial about what I drink. I do not even open my old cabs.

i think that's why i almost never buy more than 3 or 4 bottles of any one wine. i'm concerned that my palate for the wine will have expired before my supply has.

Maybe you should have another CDP.

I feel your pain. I just moved 4 cases from my big cellar into the queue in the kitchen that should have been drank in 2006. Once I finish those I can go to work on the ~200 bottles scheduled to go in 2007.

We've been thinking of some place to go this weekend to escape the cold. I think I know where to go now!!

You think you've got a problem Shannon. Look at me. I don't drink except when I am with other people. Tricia and I eat dinner at night and I don't open a bottle.

Actually I am seriously considering doing a DUMP soon. And of course there is always April 1st to look forward to.

It is tough to think about what to collect. I like 7-10 year old Cal Cabs, but I wasn't thinking about that 7-10 years ago!
