I will try to get up there to take a look and I will report back. On paper, or more accurately on the computer screen, it looks great. But being an engineer I realize a lot of things could look great on paper but not work that well in the real world. They claim that your wine is available 365 days a year 7am - 11pm. I don't know if they will take shipments for you.

It sounds like a temperature controlled self service storage center.

TN,
Dumb question: How's parking at the Subterranean? No problem? I just have to ask because it's in the city of Oakland.

Thanks,
Tim

I have friends who use (used?) Wine Chest. A few years ago, I hooked up with a tasting group that met there every couple weeks. I was planning to get a couple lockers there, but the tasting group was asked to take a hike (mutual hostilities between the owner and tasting group leader), so I never pulled the trigger. I think it's a quality operation, a bit more expensive than some other choices. They do accept deliveries, at least they used to accept them. The other place I looked at in that general area is Price Self Storage, see http://www.priceselfstorage.com/location/wine_storage , on Saranap Ave in Walnut Creek. In the end, didn't use either of these locations.

Tim, just because it's in the city of Oakland, doesn't make it dangerous. However, it is in West Oakland where it can be dangerous! Seriously, they deal crack a couple of blocks away and there was a hooker on the corner of Grand and Filbert when I left this AM.

The good news: Dreyer's stores their ice cream on the first floor. Subterranean has the 2nd floor. It's really kept cool, I think a constant 55F. I don't know how much space he has, but it might be 30,000 sq ft +.

More good news: he has an automatic gate. You call as you approach and he can open the gate for secure parking. Or you can idle and get out to buzz and be let in.

To tell the truth, I've never had a problem down there. But, a lot of bad stuff does happen in West Oakland. Mostly drug related.

Hookers? Why didn't you say so?! Hookers, wine and crack. What else do I need?

Actually, I was just asking about parking because usually, cities are harder to park in then the suburbs. I hang, or used to hang around Oakland a lot and never had any trouble. Geeze, I used to park a Corvette in the Coleseum Bart station parking lot. Once a Bart police attendent told me he can't guarantee it would be there when I get back. I thought he was joking but he was serious.

Al, thanks for the heads up about price self storage. I'll check that one out too.

She looked cute from a distance, if you like that young, hungry, emaciated, crack look. Oh, and by the way, the city of Oakland will confiscate your car if you are arrested and then sell it if it is used during the transaction with a prostitute. I don't think you even have to be convicted. They just flip it with the proceeds going to OPD.

"Honey, guess what, we're getting a new car!"

I ended up renting a space from Price Wine Storage on Saranap in Walnut Creek. I never even made it up to the Wine Chest. I figured it's closer to my house, in a pretty good neighborhood, underground, clean, and has a friendly staff.

It's very clean and quiet. I've been there twice and only saw one other car that was moving near the place. It's right across the street from a mortuary. (Quiet crowd). The wine facility is accessible via a keypad that opens the door of an elevator. The elevator takes you down one floor below the parking lot. It opens to two large oak doors that enter into the temp/humidity controlled area. They have two "Home Depot" style flat carts for hauling stuff between your car and your locker. They have one of those warehouse style stair-ladders for people like me with top row lockers. It's on wheels and forms a sturdy tripod so it won't tip.

I rented the smallest "18 case" space. It's a big old cube measuring 30.5" wide by 36.5" tall by 41" deep. My initial calculations tell me I can fit about 18 of the regular (non-foam) wine case boxes with about 5.5" to 6" on the side and top for stuffing odd size bottles or 3 bottle inline boxes if I need to.

I was given my own lock, brand new and out of a sealed retail case. I have all three keys. The space costs $25 per month. The first two months are 1/2 price for a promotional deal. There is a $20 one time admin. fee presumably for the lock and paperwork. He told me about all fees and costs up front before I even said I would take the space so there were no surprises.

He said that they accept deliveries but I didn't ask any details on the subject. You can pay your monthly at their website or you can, if you want, have it auto deducted every month.

He said in the 1.5 years he's been there they've never had a theft or a cooling system  breakdown. I believe even if something did break down, it would take a long time for it to get hot if ever. It's underground and insulated. There are security cameras in several places to watch who comes in and out FWIW.

So that's what I found. Thanks Al, for the suggestion on Price. Now I've got my surplus wine out of my living room just as the weather is starting to heat up.

Price looked pretty reasonable to me, I also liked the fact that it was underground. I probably would have used them if they were closer to me. I think Glenn, who used to post more often on vinocellar, is the person who told me about Price. Hope it works out great for you, but you'll probably soon upgrade to a bigger locker! It seems to be a constant of nature.
