| OK, I'm looking for an offsite wine storage company. I'm considering VinFolio (though I've received less feedback than I was hoping for), but I would expect a few places here in the south bay would store wine for collectors. Does anyone know how to find wine storage companies in san jose???
(Google & Yahoo have NOT been much help)

| The only storage facility I have experience with is WineBank, and I would recommend them. They are located in Menlo Park (off the Willow exit on 101, about half a mile in the direction of the Bay), so the location is fairly convenient. They have a large warehouse that is well lit, and the staff has always been helpful. I haven't checked prices in a few years, but I remember thinking that they had some of the more reasonable prices around. As a convenience, they'll accept wine deliveries for clients. They also offer other services such as selling wine on their website and are teaming with CellarTracker to provide barcoding services. I haven't used these other services, so can't comment on it.
Here's the URL:http://www.winebank.us/

In Los Gatos.
I'm using Le Cave in South San Jose behind the Capital Flea Market. They're not the easiest to do business with, and I'm looking forward to moving everything out of there in a few months. It has kept my wine at 56 degrees for a few years though. | | Paul Romero - Owner/Winemaker Stefania Wine www.stefaniawine.com

| They've never been able to bill me right.
I had it set up for credit card billing and the same thing happened every month. They auth'ed as a card present transaction, then tried to bill as a card not present. That sends off a fraud alert to the bank and every month my atm card would be frozen and I'd get a call from the bank. 1/2 the time the transaction would decline and they'd try to repeat the process.
I knew exactly what they were doing and the mistake from some time in the credit card business, and they never did figure it out. It's one number on the code you send to the processor, and even then if you auth and bill on the same day it will go through. So, I went to having them send me a bill. About 1/3 of the time I get the late notice before the bill comes. Last month the bill and late notice arrived the same day with the same postage cancellation date.
Bascially this is a junk storage site with a refridgerated floor. I go very early to avoid the rush of flea market vendors and assorted other junk storers who crowd the elevator and use all the moving carts.
Any atttempt to deal with the staff on anything is a pain in the ass. IQ levels run around 80, and that's if you have two of them in the office and you're combining scores.
It stays locked though. The temperature has never been over 61 or below 54, and I have a good space.
Figuring out the monthly cost vs the cost of converting a room at home though, made converting the room a no brainer. It will pay for itself in about 30 months. | | Paul Romero - Owner/Winemaker Stefania Wine www.stefaniawine.com

| | OK, then I'll use them for a little while. I need some storage for about 6 months while my garage is rebuilt, and a "visitor quality" wine room is built. | | | |

| CaveMasters downstaires in Old Town (Los Gatos) right under California Cafe.
My friend Larry Stepek (formerly of Cafe Marcella and now at Forbes Mill) and his wife are the owners.

| David, thanks for the suggestion, but I can't imagine a less convenient place for me to get to. "Hey, I'm going to go get some wine. I'll be back in an hour if I'm lucky finding a parking place" | | | |

| Just talked to Hillsdale wine storage... the only size they have available is 5x14 for $106/month, or 5x15 for $112/month. When I ask them about the height of the storage space, they say it is.. fifteen feet high!!!! Is there a convenient way to convert space into #cases that can be stored there? If it truly 15 feet high, that is over 1000 cubic feet. I'm going to guess a case takes about 2 cubic feet... meaning the space can handle 500 cases? Am I doing something wrong with my math here?
Just to compare... with CaveMasters, a 24 case space costs $42/month.

I'll leave the higher math to others, except for observing that dealing with a 15-foot locker would be a pain. I doubt you'd use half of the space.
I pay about $1 per bottle per year for off-site and have heard this is relatively standard. The quote from CaveMasters is $1.75 per bottle annually, which strikes me as very expensive.

| Yeah, when she told me it was 15 feet high I had to clarify a couple times. I can't imagine stacking it that high. Clearly I would need to put in some kind of shelving unit. Still, the price is pretty darn good.
I have a friend who claims he'll store my wine, but he makes no promises that he won't "mistakenly" pull one of my bottles some evening...

I keep my wine at Subterraneum in Oakland. It is NOT the south bay but I like the facility and the owner is good guy. If you don't wnat into the cellar every week, then you might consider driving up there once every three or four months.

| Another issue, at least if you want to be able to access all the wine easily, is the space is only 5 feet wide.

| | I also store my wine at Subterraneum and can vouch for Joe (the owner). Also, you can have your wine delivered directly to Subterraneum (there's a fee to receive the wine). This is a big advantage for me cuz I have no other safe/reliable way to receive wine shipments (can't at home, and can't at work....wouldn't want to as it's in hot pleasanton). So it means the wine goes directly from the UPS truck to cold storage, which is nice. He's only open wed-saturday tho, so gotta plan your visits. | | Ladd Cellars | |

I've sent many shipments there and it requires staying on top of your shipping company. Normally, they try to ship on a Monday - which from Napa means it will get there on Tuesday. No good.
So, it works, but you have to remind the winery NOT to ship on a Monday.

| ok Randy. You don't like my advice. Just fyi they do have loading parking down below in back of the center at their main door.
So look at:
Shurgard Storage (408) 225-5500 3900 Vista Park San Jose, CA 95136
Is Capital and 87 too far away? I would think not. If it is you should just buy the house next door.
I used these people for over a year. Here you rent a locked locker. The price wasn't bad after I smoozed the mgr down a bit. I'm sure you won't like it though because I recommend it

Wow, have I done something to you? What causes you to believe this?
I will be using these folks near Capitol & 87

| I'm about to have a serious overflow of wine bottles going into the summer season. I'm already over by 50 with well over 100 either on order or soon to be (Carlisle & KB here we come...)
I live in the East Bay (Danville) Anybody use The WineChest in Pleasant Hill? It's a little more convenient that going to Oakland for me but seems maybe a bit high? It's about $1.22 per bottle per year.
Any other East Bay-er's suggestions closer to home?
Thanks, Tim

| | I also had to get additional storage about a year ago. I opted for Subterranean because of location. I don't think I've been down there since I moved in. I do have to pull a bottle though for a dinner next week. I assume it's still there! If you go with WineChest, give us your thoughts. | | TN posted on Cellartracker "I drink no more than a sponge."
