Here is a spot to name your wine of the day for this Thanksgiving Day 2002.

We had some incredible Pinots, Zinfandels, and Chards today, but nothing could outmatch the grace of the WOTD: 1960 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon Cask A-12. I was blown away at its youth and power. I wish I had a case of these in my cellar. Spectator rated it a 89-90 and I would give it a few more points than that, plus 5 bonus points for a California Cab. living this long. A wine to be remembered.

Mine was a 1999 Meeker Four Kings. This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petite Verdot. The aroma was bursting of fruit: black cherry and berry. In the mouth: lots of blackberry and currant; complex fruit. Nice legs. Solid tannins with a nice long finish. Very well balanced.

BN Points - 91

I spent the day with a bunch of non wine-os, but I did bring a 2000 Ramey Russian River chard.
This one stood out. Pears, apricots, and maybe a little grapefruit. Not oaky at all, and a soft,
understated style. I liked it - 90 points.
Today, however, we go for the Kistler!!

I had dinner w/ my father and his wife, who don't drink wine. I brought only one bottle for the 3 of us to share, '01 Melville Estate Pinot Noir. They really enjoyed it. I brought Riedels and they were really impressed. I also gave them (and my 9 year old brother, who kept asking about the wine) a small lesson on why we use these glasses, why we swirl the wine and how to taste it. Very fun.

The magnum of 1989 Beaucastel that was brought to Thanksgiving by a guest. Beautiful warm and powerful fruit on the palate. It didn't last long at the table. HdV Chard and Red were the winners in the young wine category.

2001 Marquis Philips Sarah's Blend. Not worth Parker's 93, but a solid 90.

2000 Hop Kiln Late Harvest Zinfandel, 3.2% RS made this just sweet enough for dessert but not overly so.

Easily the 1992 Etude CS. Drank before the dinner itself.

Others we had:

1994 Mondavi Reserve CS
1999 L'Ecole Columbia Valley CS
1998 Leasingham Bin 61 Shiraz

We were not the hosts of the dinner, the hosts provided the dinner wines (2000 Buckley's Shiraz, and Columbia Crest and Chateau St. Michelle Chards).

The turkey was deep fried, our first time, with a Jamaican rub, the dressing was our red and chipotle pepper with Andouille sausage recipe. None of the dinner wines matched well.

Jones-- I am crashing your next Thanksgiving. With friends like that, man o man.

GA-- I think you mentioned you splash decanted the Kistler Pinot and started consuming within a half hour. How'd it change over time, or did it not last that long?

We tasted and consumed the Kistler within the hour. To be honest, this wine really does not need to be decanted. It was quite impressive, and the nose was beautiful. I didn't take any notes but I will when I open the next one.

If this is what the Kistler bottom rung Pinot delivers, I guess I will have to figure out what to do with a lot more Chardonnay than I can drink.

Anyone in SoCal want Kistler Chard at cost?

I wasn't very impressed with the wine I had out so I went to the "old standby"...2000 Martinelli G&L zin. Dinner guests were wowed with wine (and the legs!).

Kistler Dutton Ranch Chard 00...
Oily, mineral feel. Grapefruit mostly on the palate. Probably the most understated Kistler I've tried. Not much oak. Long subtle finish.

Dr. T -- how was the BR? I have it in my cellar and I want to know if it's a-hummin right now. I am waiting to pop it (I only have one ) for a special occasion....

For Thanksgiving #2, we had some bubbly that my father provided, decent enough stuff, but, well, it's my dad. We also had some of the Pine Ridge Chenin Blanc Viognier that was the September TAA wine prior to dinner as well as we all stood about chatting and getting the mixed up put luck affair assembled and so on. We had theLouis Bernard Cotes du Rhone Villages 2000 with dinner. I will post TNs on this. I know many of you probably tried a bottle of this, what with the WS 91 rating and cheap price tag, and it may have been discussed previously someplace. Let's just say I was not wowed even remotely by this wine.

Finally, for Thanksgiving #3, we had a 2001 Lucien Albrecht Alsace Tokay Pinot Gris prior to dinner as the dregs with some mushroom soup. We followed that with the 99 Justin Isosceles. I decanted this and it was sitting there for about 1.5 hours prior to consuming. Even many hourse later this wine is not ready. I knew this of course before I opened it, but I needed to see what it was like.
