I only buy from mailers when I can't find the wine at retail. Given that I like to buy small production wines, often buying from the mailer is the only way I can get the wine at all.

What dinwiddie said.

Then again, I am now focusing on the Italian wine thing, so that means less in mailers, generally, anyway.

I think it is funny how I keep saying I am 'focusing on Italian Wine now' because, while I am mentally there already, I haven't really bought any. D'oh. Must correct that soon.

Why do people when shopping discount their time/energy and their own transportation costs. I see customers all the time that literally spend hours shopping to save $5.00.

I will support a winery and buy direct to personally support the proprietor especially if it is a "small" family operation. I do the same with everything I purchase. I also believe in pinching pennies but I can do that also. WTF! I doubt too many people here use food stamps.

CWG - Great topic!

I'm sure I'll be repeating some points made by just about everybody that posted here, but here's my 2 cents:

The mailers I'm on give me the opportunity to get the wine I want, but can't get consistently or at all via retail.

I DO have to pay double for shipping and gladly do so, otherwise, I'm stuck drinking whatever crap Total Wine is trying to shove down my throat! This is just the cost of drinking good juice for those of us in my neck of the woods!

I don't feel the need to support all of the wineries that I receive mailers from, only those that give something back to me/us. We all know the list of "usual suspects" that visit us here at VC fairly often, people like Bressler, JW1, Loring, Match, A.P. Vin, etc... We are very fortunate in that many of the people that are involved in making the wine that we all enjoy, make themselves available to us, in many cases on a daily basis, to answer questions, educate us and more times than not, just to be "one of the guys"! I know that I personally benefit immensely form their participation here. How many of you have sent them a PM or email and had them respond to you personally? I know I have many times and in some cases about something that had absolutely nothing to do with their product. Why? To me, the answer is simple! They are wine geeks like the rest of us! For these people it's more than "just a business"! They love wine! They love talking wine! They love conversing with others (US!) that share their passion for wine! How could I NOT want to support these people???

I will continue to support them. If they have a bad year, I will still buy, though not in the quantity that I would in a good year. If a point comes where it's obvious that the quality is going downhill and I feel they are not making an effort to turn things around, then I'll drop them. I'm a very patient man, but only to a point!

I just want to be clear here. I'm not going to stop buying Bressler from Bob if I get an email from the Wine Library and I can save a net of $5 by buying from them. But if I get my 2007 mailer from Bob and his wine is $145.00 direct and I get an email from the Wine Library and it's $99 I might alter my behavior. I might only order the $325 magnum from Bob and get a 6 pack from the Wine Library.

I always order direct if the difference is small as I like to support the winery and know the wine was stored properly.

I was wondering that If I buy a case of wine at the wine store, didn't I support the winery??

Absolutely! Sell through is more important than improving your direct/indirect ratio. Inventory is not your friend.

Disclaimer: I AM a wine geek!

Lou, Thank You...and just to play the other side...having consumers (purchasers) such as yourself...makes it VERY enjoyable for us ( I will speak for the other producers, don't flame me ). A little bit of me travels the country and ends up on your table...that is pretty cool for someone that walks out of a "day job" everyday with nothing to show.

Hey Pops-- As an aside, I do go out of my way to support local operations where prudent in other matters. I avoid most chain restaurants (if not all) to support the local unique restaurants in my area. I also found a decent local appliance place, too (aren't you proud of me?). Now if only I could find a reputable and solid local car fix it place.
