This was brought up in the1992 laurel glen sonoma cabernet sauvignon thread, but I thought I'd break it out as it's own topic for dicussion, and it has to do with disparate point ratings between WS and RP.

For kicks a while ago I put together a spread sheet of all 100 point wines from both WS and RP from 1945 to the present, and included for each the rating of the other. This yielded some interesting results.

The widest point variations are listed below:

1990 Chapoutier Ermitage le Pavillon..............RP: 100....WS: 85
1975 Lafleur..............................................RP: 100....WS: 85
1991 Chapoutier Ermitage le Pavillon..............RP: 100....WS: 87
1945 Lafleur..............................................RP: 100....WS: 88
1988 Mouton-Rothschild..............................RP: 89......WS:100
1955 La Mission Haut Brion...........................RP: 100....WS: 89
1991 Domaine Leroy Latricieres Chambertin.....RP: 100....WS: 89

I find it interesting indeed that across the board (including above the 90 point mark), WS consistently rates wines much lower than RP's 100 point mark. However, when WS rates a wine 100 points, the RP rating is much more in line with what you would expect (typically high 90s).

FWIW, I orginally took this on as an exercise to determine what wines were rated 100 points by both. In case you are interested, these are:

1990 Petrus
1989 Haut-Brion
1989 Petrus
1982 Mouton-Rothschild
1961 Latour
1961 Paul Jaboulet Aine Hermitage la Chapelle
1961 Petrus
1947 Lafleur
1945 Mouton-Rothschild

ew-good work. with young wines, it can often be difficult predicting how they will develop down the road. many times the tasters are drinking closed tannic monsters that they believe will show differently in the future. they probably use the development of older siblings as a benchmark.

when tasting much older wines, provenance and storage becomes a major factor. even parker has admitted this in a wine advocate a few years back, "there are no great wines, only great bottles of wine".

Hmmm, quite interesting to note that disparity.

Now, to make things more even interesting: Has anyone had any of the wines listed that were rated 100 points by both? I, personally, have not.

STW and I had a RP98 WS89 on Saturday, a 1992 La Jota 11th Anniversary Cab. Both of us I beleive gave this 98+, it was a phenomonal wine.

I don't find WS ratings to be consistent enough to use as a guide. WA ratings are more to my taste, so I can use them as a guide. If nothing else, highly rated WA wines can be resold in the secondary market. Although, I have to admit, people are paying premiums for highly rated WS wines as well.

Very interesting analysis.

But, to be honest, I get most of my information about what is good and what I should buy from you all. The recommendations I have gotten and follwed up on have rarely if ever let me down.
