I spent today tasting in the Russian River Valley, where it was 100 degrees (even in Green Valley). With most of the pinot still on the vine, I wonder how this weather will affect the vintage. I understand it was mid-90s yesterday and will be the same tomorrow. That's pretty darn hot for that AVA.

if the growers watered before the heatwave the grapes should be ok. But I won't be surprised to see some raisins coming in.

And yeah, today was f'n hot in the RRV.

I watered late Thursday night and so far so good. Tomorrow, however, is another day.

This is probably more dependable than some of the predictions in the "RMP predicts" thread.

Curious, is it ever a good idea to water the vines themselves? You know, the leaves and whatnot?

I know I tend to do this to certain plants in my yard as they actually absorb moisture that way as well as through the roots.

The simple answer is no. Water on the leaves means water on the fruit. That is like rain and can only create mildew and other disease pressure. Grape vines are very efficient at picking up water from the root system so we use drip irrigation.

I know but when it is 100+ in the vineyard and 85 in the house, a little humor goes a long way. We are going to water again this evening. If heat spike continues, harvest will be this weekend.

I hear it is only 74 degrees a few miles west of you!

It is 68 at the "official" weather station at Bodega Bay. That is 6.8 miles west of me at sea level. Unfortunately, I am at 1200 feet where it is much warmer. Last night at 11 pm, it was 57 in Bodega Bay and 77 in the vineyard. We still need for the west wind to fill in. So far - no deal. Off to work outside.

Are there any concerns about fires?

I heard on the news that over 10,000 acres in Sonoma County have burned and that the fire is only 20% contained.

Grazie, Pete.

Hey Board-o, I saw the fire bit on the news, too. Are any vineyards at risk?
