Has anyone had/tried any of these new Riedels designed for restaurants? How are they?

from Riedel.com...

Riedel Introduces RESTAURANT - fine stemware for restaurants and bars.

Riedel's legendary design techniques and quality control have now been applied to a range created specifically for the on-trade: Riedel Restaurant. Individual glasses are designed with the help of international wine experts to enhance specific grape varieties or styles of wine.
A selection of top restaurateurs, hoteliers and sommeliers from around the U.K. experienced how the widely-anticipated new range performs on-table during lunch at Petrus, with glassmaker Georg Riedel and winemaker Angelo Gaja.

Georg Riedel invited guests to try out the new range of glasses, designed specifically for the on-trade. Each course was accompanied by one of Angelo Gaja’s wines, served in two different Riedel Restaurant glasses. This allowed guests to experience the dramatic affect that the shape of the glass can have on wine. Angelo Gaja was on hand to introduce each of the wines.

Riedel Restaurant was designed with, and has been thoroughly tested by, those working with fine stemware in restaurants and bars. The new 8-glass range is based on Riedel’s acclaimed Vinum bowls and possesses the durability to survive high-performance restaurants. Produced with non-lead glass suitable for industrial dishwashers, the glasses have slightly wider bases and stronger, round, seamless stems affording them elegance combined with stability.

Assuming they did their homework, they'll make the price point right as well. It'd be nice to see some better stemware out there.

Riedel is aggresively working the restaurant market that Spieglau currently holds. I was offered these stems at a dollar cheaper than the Spieglau we currently use. Same exact glass but with a better brand name.

So Winebrat, are you saying Reidel has gotten their prices down to about $6 to $7 retail for these glasses (and kept the craftmanship in line with the Vinum)?

I can get the pricing tomorrow but I think it was like $5.50 a stem wholesale cost. They are ONLY available for restaurants. They are not available for retail.

That price should be higher than the Speig's as I can get those via a retailer for $6. As for only being available to a restaurant, I bet I could get some through a wine shop attached to a restaurant without much problem if I wanted. They are trying to break into this segment, Riedel doesn't have the upper hand.

FYI

As a retailer of Riedel. Please note.

These are for sale only to the trade,in large quantities. When they say large, they are thinking of pallet quantities. Yes they are cheaper, but do have some longevity.

If you wish to get 6 for the home, you will need to contact a retailer, that can couple you up with a resturant order.

Are these things any better than the Spiegs? Or is it just the name? Seems to me if they gave them free to the restaurants it would help increase their market share at retail.

How do they compare with Riedel's current low end in qualaity? In price? In breakability (is that a word?)?

Here is the info:
Wholesale prices as well as the stemware are ONLY available to restaurants.

The stems are all $3.98 per stem. Yes I said $3.98 per stem
Available stems:
cab/chard 21oz.
viog/chard 12oz.
pinot 24oz.
sangio/riesl 13oz.
syrah 23oz.
new world chard 21oz.

pretty much everything is covered but port and sparkling.

You are also not required to buy any kind of quantity. One box of 12 is plenty to get the price.

My guess is that $4 is about what retailers can get the Speigs for. So there will be competition here. It will be interesting to see what happens here is the SF Bay area as far as what restaurants use. Most of the better places are using Speigs. The only place I've been to that has Riedel Somms is The French Laundry (something tells me they got a deal).

The Spiegs go for $4.25-$4.98 wholesale depending on the specific stems. The difference is that the Spiegs are available to anybody. That is where Riedel will get exclusive and restaurants will buy in.

I am opening up a new wine bar/store here in Sac. in about 3-4 months and I am going through these logistics as we speak.

My current restaurant/wine bar uses only the Spiegs with every glass of wine poured and are always praised by patrons for having "REAL" stems for their wine service. Stems are a sad issue at fine restaurants in Sacramento so for wine lovers it is nice to see that owners care.

Winebrat

Thanks for the logistics. I called the Cust service at Riedel yesterday, and was told that I could only get them from my rep, and only as a resturant. Guess Ed's place will open soon!!!
