Fontodi, the 99 chianti classico is wonderful and if you want something really special try Fontodi's Flaccianello. It's a super tuscan, but 100% Sangiovese.

Phoenix

For California I really like the Shafer Firebreak. It is a blend but I think 95% Sangiovese

'99 Fontodi Chianti Classico
'00 Pertimali Rosso di Montalcino

for california, I used to say that the Dalla Valle was king, but alas, those grapes have been pulled out. But if you see some of her Pietre Rosse, give it a try. Her neighbor, Showket, also makes a pretty decent wine. There seems to be something magic about the eastern hills of the Napa Valley for that grape.

I agree that Showket makes one of the best Cal Sangiovese
available.
I've got 3 98s and 3 99s left.
They are by far my favorite sangiovese.

Don't forget the Di Majo - I posted notes on it. I picked it up for around $7 it is a 89 point wine according to Parker and I stand by that. It is one of the best wine buys I have ever found.

I am also interested in this data. I am going to start experimenting with it as a pair to tomato-based sauce dishes as recommended by some of you.

I'd be especially interested in Italian Wines of this varietal. I have jotted down some of the names here already. More, please!

Tua Rita makes some very good, largely Sangiovese based, wines. TuaRita99 and I had the '00 Perlato Del Bosco last night and it was great. Opened up after only 5 minutes in the glass w/ no decanting.

That Di Majo that TCK recommends is outstanding for the dollars, its a great rounded full fruit driven wine-great stuff.

My favorite Cal sangiovese: Showket

Monte Antico.
It dosen't say Sangiovese on the label but is a great wine for $8/9 x bottle.

Also look for Morellino di Scansano,which is synonimus of Sangio, just a different clone produced mostly on the South of Tuscany, it varies from ruby to dark purple
in color but keeps the the basic caratheristics of strawberry, raspberry and red fruit
in general, if you find a Riserva tends toward mushroom and dark fruit jam.
Lots of producers, some of the best are Le Pupille and Moris Farm.

Rosso di Montalcino is another one, made from the same variety of Sangio used to
make Brunello di Montalcino (Sangiovese Grosso), infact it is called "Baby Brunello"
and cost less than half the price of the bigger brother. Banfi is a good one

And, off course, the Sangiovese di Romagna, with more up-front scents of red berries
and violet, some good producers are Le Grillaie and Umberto Cesari

If your going to go for a Rosso Montalcino I would go for a Ciacci.

I have to agree with ojeffso. I haven't really liked very many new world sangios that I have had. I would prefer a cheap chianti doc to most. Why not try some of the 97' Brunellos? May be controversial, but suckling seems to like them.
