| I’ve reached a crisis point that most of us apparently get to… I’ve run out of space for my wine.
My offsite storage space (shelf) is full, and I could get another shelf. But the problem is that the offsite property boosted their rates significantly in the last 2 years, and if I want to continue to use offsite storage I am going to be spending an increasing amount of my wine budget on storage costs rather than wine purchases. And the storage prices will only go up with time.
My place now charges $342 for about 12 cases of wine. I’ve realized that I probably cannot reach my goal of having a vast wine collection because of these storage costs. Even a 1000 bottle collection would cost about $2400 a year for storage (at current prices). That’s not so bad, I guess, but multiply that times the number of years that I intend to store wine (at least 40 more, knock on wood) and you realize that this is not an insignificant amount.
Home storage is not an option, for various reasons.
I’ve pondered maybe finding a small commercial property site and just building my own wine storage. Initial costs would be substantial, but I would not be at the mercy of an offsite company that can jack up rates at their whim. I’d only be at the mercy of property tax appraisers, the electric company, insurance company, and any criminal who decided he’d like to break into the place…
