Eric - I'm with you on the 2000 Reignac. Lost its fruit much faster than I would have expected. Last night at a fantastic event: 2005 Aubert Reuling - Butterscotch, bread, honey, apricots, floral notes with a firm acid. Astounding wine.
2002 Corton Charlemagne - A bit lackluster. I thought it had a tad of oxidation 2002 Martinelli Gold Ridge RRV - Medicinal, menthol finish. A very odd performance.
2005 Rochioli West Block - Cotton candy, raspberry, sour cherries, a bit of heat on the finish, but.. yum 2006 Rochioli Estate - A good wine, but not in the league of the west block.
2001 SQN Midnight oil - Beef blood, pomegranate, plum, cassis. A very good wine, but not as stellar as I was expecting. The wine came off as a bit plodding and heavy. 2004 Caymus Special Select - Started off with green notes that dissipated with time, leaving nice oak, plum, currant, oak and tannic flavors. Really really nice; I just wish they would lighten up on the oak slightly.
2004 Maybach Materium - Currants, nice tannins, cassis, toast, strawberry, with a final note of "wow". Really good. I brought this and did not want to like it since I passed on the mailer for 2005. Oh well. I've got too much wine as it is.
And since DavidN was present, even though nobody wanted to, we had to go and order Foie and pair it with 1997 Yquem. What can I say? I'm just a good friend looking to help him out. Beautiful flavors of peach and honey, thick textured, not as much acid as I recall from previous tastings so it almost seemed like baby fat. This will age well long into my grandkids time. Thanks David! Honestly, last night was awesome. NCVL, we missed you! But it was a great group, good conversation, the restaurant was excellent, though a tad slow on taking our orders at the beginning (we were there for 85 minutes before ordering our entree!!!) However, the company made the time fly by. I would do another evening there anytime!
