  • 2003 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Kanzler - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (4/22/2006)
    WIML94,NOWA,WS96

Tasted April 22, 2006 at LilacWine’s house in Fredericksburg, TX. Opened and served immediately in a Spiegelau Authentis Balloon Magnum glass. Purple color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of plum, black cherry and spice box. Flavors of black berries, red licorice and raspberries. Simply delicious. Can be drank now but I’m going to hold my next bottle until 2009 and see what happens. I’m betting some pretty serious stuff. At the $48.00 a bottle release price from the winery the value is bordering be excellent and outstanding. (94 pts.)

The Kanzler has been my favorite right out of the chute with the Sonoma Coast in a close second. I keep waiting for the '03 4-Barrel to get better but at the momment I think the
Kanzler are drinking better.

The 2002 and 2003 Kanzlers are among my all time favorite Pinots. I have not opened an '04 yet but should do one pretty soon.

How are you going to do that?

Michael Browne brought a couple of bottles of his 2004 Kanzler when he joined Mark Neal, Gove Celio and families at dinner with the DC Crü and friends. A little more powerful and focused than the 2004 Russian River Valley PN he also brought, I noticed a slight dustyness (not a bad one) to the nose that foretold a more earthy taste. Bright fruits and a note of vanilla. This could probably use a couple more years in the cellar, but it is great now. Loved this wine and wish I had some to put in the cellar.

I had the '02 Kanzler recently and it was fantastic, much more open and complex than when I last tried it a year or so ago. So far of the '03s I think the Cohn is drinking best (more open and balanced than the Koplen or Kanzler right now imo).
