We had this wine at Cafe Boloud in NYC during Mrs. TJ and my's 'Lost Food Weekend' in NYC last month. I was drawn to selecting this bottle since it was available on the menu. Our experience with Etude Pinot Noir was limited, but, after coming off the tasting we did at the 10/19 LBI Pinot Noir dinner with the rest of the Jersey Boyz, we were psyched to try a more limited bottling from Etude.

The wine was delicious already on opening. It had rich currant and other red berries on the nose, followed by blueberries and cassis. It was a medium/medium-dark color. It was served in decent Spiegelau stems (not Pinot specific, of course), and, sitting there and smelling this wine, it seemd to me to be everything a superlative Pinot Noir should be.

It tasted like it smelled, too. Some minerals started to mix on in to the wine as it started to open in the glass (it was not decanted). The velvety tannins seemd to interlace with the fruit as well.

About an hour and 45 minutes after opening, it developed an aroma of mocha and the taste changed a bit to include some definite chocolate-yness. About 10-15 minutes later, cinnamon appeared as well. I just kept thinking to myself that this sucker just keeps getting better and better, If only we decanted it and if only we'd had more time to let it sit before we started... Ah well.

This wine carries a TJ rating of 93 points. I think there is some upside to this as well, another year or two in the bottle and if you were to decant it for an hour or two, this sucker will blow your socks off. Sadly, with only 16 barrels made, this is in pretty short supply.
