Had this wine tonight with simple pasta and tomato sauce. Wine tasted out of Riedel Vinum Bord stems.

Wine is a deep black/blue to cherry rim. Medium bodied wine with lots of sweet fruit, notably blackberry, blueberry and cola. Nice wine, but not really deep. Good food wine at a nice price ($18). jb Rating 87.

Day 2 of this wine confirmed my previous impressions. Tannins softened, fruit still very present, still not much depth and length. Good quaffer and nice price.

00 Justin Cab,

Leathery spice on the nose with mild fruit. Medium body with fine - smooth tannins and gripping acidity. Flavors of dark fruit (plum) come through in the mouth and the wine has a polished finish with lingering warmth. Overall this is a well structured wine that I enjoyed.

My notes of this wine:
Had mine last weekend in a Riedel Vinum Bordeaux glass. Cloudy dense purple obviously unfiltered. Raspberry nose with a spicy pepper overtone. Fruit turns dry with minute dusty tannins. It lacks what is important to ME in a cab which is fruit that has a little more life to it and some structure/backbone. 85 pts.

My impressions, a little long perhaps,

Unlike some wine producers, Justin has always put a lot of information on their trademark pastel pink label.
100% Barrel-aged 17 months
27% New Oak
70% American Oak
30% French Oak
100% Own-rooted
100% Hand-harvested
100% Family Owned and Operated
100% Unfiltered
13.5% Alcohol

There is always a description of the growing season and the harvest on every bottle of Justin Wine. I give it an extra point for letting me know something about the wine without having to dig through a web site or send an email to the winery.

I buy some of this wine every year. It is one that I have found to have reasonable value in the escalating price structure of California Cabernet Sauvignon. I decanted the wine for two hours and served it in Lenox Tuscany Grand Bordeaux stems.

Nose: Dark cherries with a hint of teriyaki.

Color: Deep purple. Tends to opaque in the glass. Blocks light.

Taste: Dark cherries with a hint of cocoa powder. Smokey. I detect some cedar shavings and a hint of glycerin. Medium bodied with some nice flavor layers. Not a lot of tannins on the front end or on the finish. This one has good concentration and none of the green flavors of the 1998. I’ve had this on three occasions and I think it benefits from a couple of hours of vigorous decanting.

Finish: Medium to long, sweet, tasty.

All in all a decent effort by Justin in what has been foretold to be a difficult vintage by the various wine pundits. Perhaps the warmer Paso Robles temperatures helped ripen the grapes. This wine is definitely a lesser effort than the 1999 Justin Cabernet, but it is also from a lesser vintage. I don’t think it rates a full 90 points. It does come up short of what I would call excellent. I give this one a solid B for QPR at under a twenty.

2000 Justin Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles

Pretty good.

Toasted smokiness blows off to reveal a pretty luscious blackberry zone interlaced with tobacco, sage and maybe even a hint of mint. Nice tannins and a fairly mouthpuckering decently long finish.

GA,

i love all that info they put on the bottle. it is if they really care to let the consumer know what goes into their wine. more winemakers should do this.

TJ,

did you pick up any vegetal nuances? the last bottle i opened up seemed to not taste as good as the first one. but then again i also opened up with 99 whitehall lane and a 99 stag's leap wc.

Nope, nothing vegetal. But I got some interesting hebal bits (the sage and all) that were in a good way. I only bought one of these. Will probably see if any is still around to score a few bottles more for easy drinking.
