• 2004 Field Stone Cabernet Sauvignon Staten Family Reserve - USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley (7/12/2008)
  Popped and poured. Dark purple. At first the nose was all American oak with intense notes of dill, cedar, and hints of coconut taking center stage. After about an hour in glass the aromas had changed noticeably and for the better with aromas of cassis, plums, and chocolate nibs appearing. Medium to full body, made in a classic style but with modern structure. Intense, especially for Alexander Valley (maybe like an older vintage of Silver Oak?). Cassis, blackberries and other dark fruits, cedar, and spices.............plus a boatload of chewy tannins. Kept evolving in glass and after a few hours the herbaceous, spicy edge developed into aromas and flavors of mint and basil...........the dark chocolate moving into the realm of well-roasted coffee. On day 2 this wine has almost completely shut down. And ager for the mid to long term. Probably one of the best cabernets I've ever tasted from the Alexander Valley and at a price point under $40 I would consider this a good buy. (92 pts.)
