You may have seen my post in wine commerce.  Anyways this wine is rumored to be grapes left over from hourglass, and partially made by Foley.  The wine maker and the vineyard are not disclosed on the bottle or on the Acme wines website.  I say a bunch of 95's and 97's on cellar tracker and I thought I would give it a shot given the $40 price tag.

Really Good not great.  It kind of tastes like it is rumored - Spectacular grape rejects with a great winemaker who didn't spend too much time with it.  There were rich blackberry's, blueberry's, chocolate, subdued tannin, no noticeable acidity.  It was complex, but not layered - so it was just kind of a jumbled yet balanced fruity cab.  Good finish.  I had to buy this wine from New York, which means it went to Napa and back to me in SF in about a months time, and was drank a few weeks after.  Very interesting wine and experience, I put it at a 90.  I don't know the motivation for all of the mid 90 scores - could be a placebo effect from all of the hype, or it could be marketing, or maybe my bottle was just in a funky stage due to the shipping, but mine was no where near mid 90's quality.  I also have the higher up bottlings - Headwater and The Butcher which could turn out to be great, I'll keep you posted.

The other month I had a 2004 Turnbull cab for $40, very similar with Dark fruit and chocolate dominating - but in this case the tannins backed up the fruit and gave it a rich creamy mouth feel.  It also had a fuller finish - 92+ points and a definite crowd pleaser.

FYI, the Headwater is available at K&L in SF. I have a bottle purchased, awaiting pickup, which I will open as soon as I'm able.
