16.5% alcohol behemoth.  Popped and allowed this monster to breathe for close to 90 minutes.  Dark purple.  Big nose of plums, blackberry, cassis, cocoa powder, graham cracker, and vanilla bean.  Full bodied.  Huge flavors on the palate, cassis and black fruits iniitally dominating.  Well balanced for such a huge wine.  Really developed over the next 2 hours into something special with complex flavors of clove, spices and even a hint of peach developing.  Great tannin structure, would match wonderfully with a steak.  I highly recommend this Gamba, so far it is the best '05 Zin I've tasted and perhaps the finest example of this cuvee I've tasted.  Can't wait to try again in 5-6 months.
Decanting this wine is recommended, already has a significant amount of sediment.
Vine 92.

I had a 2001 Gamba Old Vines upon release and thought it to be the best zin I have ever had. The 2002 wasn't in the same league though. I may have to try this one.

2005 - although panned by the critics for quality Zin - seems to have definitely worked out for Gamba. This was better than both of the '04 Gamba's I've had the chance to taste.

Interesting, I had the 2004 Old vine back in 2006 (brought it to buckhorn steakhouse)  and I thought it was fantastic.  I put it at a 93 i think.

I had the 2005 Old vine at the ZAP festivel - I had high hopes, but was dissapointed.  The 05 Old vine along with one other blend they had, both tasted like fruit bombs.  Overly jammy and syrupy.

It is quite possible that these have small drinking windows and hence you drank the 04 way to late, and I drank the 05 way too early.

Actually, I bought 3 bottles of the 2004 Morrato upon release, of course I opened one within a few days time . A nice wine, but not the 2005 (I still have one 2004 so we'll see).

And to be fair, I only tasted the 2004 Old Vines and at the time did not enjoy it nearly as much as the Morrato - which is why I didn't purchase any '04 Old Vines when it was available for me. It could most certainly be a better wine then my one experience as I never really had the chance to properly assess or see it evolve (IMO, one of the downsides to purchasing based on tastings - for a variety of reasons you really can't say that the wine presented represents the whole of what it is or can be).

I would love to try the 2005 Old Vines but haven't had the chance to taste or purchase it.

Either way, my experiences with both the 2004 and 2005 Morrato's suggest that they hide much behind their initially jammy flavors. Personally, I think the 2005 will age and I can't wait to open up another, along with my last 2004, in 16 to 32 months time.
