| Tried a bottle of this tonight was was not overly impressed. Of course it is very young and extremely fruity... I liked the other Alesia Pinots better than this one. Well-crafted but unremarkable. - 2004 Rhys Pinot Noir Alesia Sonatera - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (3/28/2007)
Clear dark garnet in color; The color seemed dark for Pinot with a purple rim more characteristic of Syrah. This wine had a bit of funk on the nose that was brief and settled in for spice and earth aromas. The flavors were mostly dark fruit, spice and earth. It was a big, bad wine with balance and some acidity that saved the finish. FWIW on stylistic preferences - I liked the other Alesia Pinots that I've tried but this one was way too Pinotfadel-like for my tastes. (88 pts.)

| If I remember, this one received the lowest score from WS of all of the PN's to date. Whether you use WS as a benchmark or not, it would seem to be a relative indicator of which ones are better than others. | | | |

| Interesting - WS scored this one a 92, the highest rated Alesia Pinot. The review says "it borders on syrupy in texture" and the description is on target. For this type of wine I think that score is pretty high but that's JMHO. | | | |

| I believe Kevin has mentioned this will be one to drink earlier than the others. If it's in the "Pinofadel" style that would make sense. Sounds very different from the basic Sonoma from the 1st mailer. | |

| FWIW, the WS review:
92 Points: Superrich and concentrated, with gobs of ripe raspberry, boysenberry and huckleberry fruit that borders on syrupy in texture. Tight, focused and persistent, finishing with a gush of dark berry fruit. Drink now through 2009. 168 cases made. –JL

| I poured out the half bottle that was left this morning and thought it might be a very good addition to some pancakes. It was a ringer for blackberry syrup. | | | |

little smokey, with some charcoal at first notes. then that mellows out to a medium complexity dark fruited pinot with herb and earth, with oak (what i suspected to be the origin of the "smokey charcoal"?) playing a nice background role. great balance, mouthfeel, etc. no jamminess, no brown sugar, no heat.
dark and deep, but no "biggness" in the pinotfandel or syrah-like sense of the word as i see others have found. i found it very enjoyable. (92 pts.) Posted from CellarTracker i didn't find any sweetness or jamminess. more of an earthy pinot to me. if i had to pick which direction (other than pinot) i would have to say more like a non "spicy/peppery" rhone syrah than a Zin. didn't find the syrupy that they WS mentioned either. maybe my taster is all fouled up. the other people who had it enjoyed it as well although they admitted liking bigger pinots. this is not similar to any KB i have had which i consider big. KB tasting bigger and richer, though not necessarily more complex, and displaying brown sugar type flavors etc.

| Earth, ripe and sweet fruits, mushrooms, and some spice. A very lush, and rich wine. | | | |

| Decanted 90 minutes. Nose of deep, dark raspberries, black cherry, and touches of mint and cassis. Dark color as well. Intensely flavored, but not too thick a mouthfeel (certainly not syrupy). Good length on the finish. Medium-low acidity and low tannin. With a little more structure, this could have been awesome, but it's nothing to sneer at. | | | |
