I did minimal research on this before purchasing ($11)- I just wanted a zin. After having the wine and reading more about the current state of this producer's wine, I'll be hesitant to pick up another one from this producer...

Cool rosey red, 2/5 intensity, very clear.
At first, vanilla-y oak, then stewed/cooked red fruit.
Fairly simple red fruits on the attack- nothing really wrong, but nothing that caught my attention. This seemed to be a bit sweet to me and with slightly weak acids and tannins that only showed themselves in the slightly bitter finish. Light to medium body.

So far, this is just an average (84 point?) wine- not terribly exciting, not terribly well balanced, but not deeply flawed. However, it tasted extremely "hot" from start to finish. I've never tasted a wine like this- you would've thought it was fortified- maybe 18-20% EtOH, but it was only 14.5% (not astronomical for cali zins). I don't know what they did wrong, but it was not pleasant.

Final tbg score of 80-81- not downright awful, but absolutely nothing to seek out.

It's a shame. 9 or 10 years ago, Peachy Canyon made 90+ point wines. I don't know how they've let themselves slip this far.

I agree with you Board_O - I used to regard this trademark as RELIABLE and have been nothing but disappointed in the past 2-3 years.

About 2-3 months ago, we had a thread here about "whatever happened to...". These guys made the List. Deservedly so, I see... It is good to know what to avoid, as well as what to buy.
