2004 Adrian Fog Pinot Noir, Oppenlander Vyd, Mendocino Co.

July 20, 2006

Very easy drinking wine with a nose of boysenberries rising out of the deep boysenberry color. Dark cherry, some cola and spice dominate the tasters with the cherries hanging around for a wonderful, although short, finish. Very well balanced. 90 points.

I suggest holding for another 12 months for optimum tasting (maybe ).

2004 Adrian Fog Oppenlander Vineyard, Mendocino Pinot Noir
Popped and poured.  Deep purple hue.  Racy nose initially featured prominent, mineral laden aromas of crushed stones, earth and herbs.  Decided to allow a further 20+ minutes time to develop in glass.  As I walked back to check on it I noticed  the aromas had grown to the point that I could smell them 10-12 feet away from the glass.  Now open, the bouquet featured forward aromas of cherry cough drop, rosewater, and the same initial aromas of minerals.  Medium to full bodied.  Multi-faceted palate...great sappy red fruit flavors of strawberries, raspberries, and cherry cough drop.  Spicy oak followed the fruit.  Palate just kept evolving, at one point even hinting at currant & cassis.  Great acidity/tannin integration.  Average finish.
IMO, this is a great Pinot...albeit still in it's infancy.  Some may find it comparable to a Syrah but for my taste the complex flavors hit all high notes.  The last few few sips even hinted at white fruits (nectarine and tropical flavors) which is something I rarely experience when drinking a red.  Never had a wine from Mendocino quite like this!
Vine 93.

Vine, you made my mouth water. Glad I have some of this in the cellar.

Interesting how sparse Parker's review is for this wine;

"The 2004 Pinot Noir Oppenlander Vineyard is an attractive, open-knit wine offering a combination of blueberries and raspberries in a medium-bodied, elegant style with good acidity and sweet tannin. It should last for 3-4 years."

I am going to open this for a bunch of VC'ers in two days and see how everyone weighs in.

That is a rather short WA note...Looks like he thought it was fruity!

For me, had the finish lasted longer it would have received a higher score. Otherwise, I loved it. IMO, just a great CA modern style pinot!

Well I hope everyone else from the board that had this tonight will weigh in, as I have subtracted myself from doing so. However I was far less enthused with this wine then you.

Perhaps someone will post a complete list of the wines at the offline but there were several New World Pinots that stood out above the Adrian Fog. As I recall, this was probably my 4th or 5th favorite behind at least the Freeman(?), Thomas, and Ladd. However, this offline was at a Vietnamese restaurant alongside so many nice wines. I find that an offline, while a great experience, is not really the best place for me to discover the nuances of any wine. Sure is fun though!

Hey, honesty is what's important!

Jason, did you pop and pour? If so, IMHO this wine needs additional time to really show. That said, based upon reading through your TN's I was pretty sure this may not have been a style for you regardless of situation or circumstance. However, since I knew that you had this bottle I thought it would be interesting to hear another opinion...

Randy, agreed - it sure is fun to taste through many wines with great people!
